Misses Ada and Maggie Lang ford have returned from a visit to relatives in Stillmore. Mr. J. F. Currie’s dwelling is nearing completion, and will be ready for occupancy soon. Mr. James A. Hughes, who did the work, will commence at once on a residence for Col. M. B. Cal houn. Mrs. Eason’s little brother and two sisters from Abbeville are vis ting her here. Williamson of Longpond is rapidly recovering from the gunshot wound recently received at the hands of a negro, and was in Mt. Vernon Tuesday. McLemore was hop ping around on crutches yesterday having suffered a general shaking and bruising up by the antics of a runaway mule last Saturday. Griner, who has served the Mt. Veanon Circuit very acceptably for two years, left with his interesting family for Baxley yesterday morning. We commend them to the good people of the town of Baxley. By the evening train from the west Rev. W. C. Glenn and family came from Talbotton to the work here. So the Methodist folks hero were only without a pastor for dinner. A DECEMBER WEDDING. A marriage of much interest to friends throughout this section is that of Miss Mamie Brown of Gro vania to Mr. Thomas Edwin Rog ers of this place, the marriage to occur Thursday morning, Decem ber 27, at the home of the bride. Miss Brown lias visited Mount Vernon and has here many admi ring friends to welcome her into our midst. Mr. Rogers was reared in this county, and is well and favorably known. They will be at home in Mt. Vernon after Feb ruary first. Several friends from Mt. Vernon will accompany Mr. Rogers to Grovania. Advance congratulations and best wishes. RIGHT UP TO THE TIMES. A. LIGHTFOOT DIES AT ADRIAN. The Monitor regrets to hear of the death of Mrs. Dollie Light foot at her home at Adrian Mrs. Lightfoot was the daughter of Mr. G. R. Mason, a prominent citizen of this county, and has a number of relatives here. We are not in possession of the particulars at tending her death. THE CITY COURT TO CONVENE. The regular monthly term of the City Court was held last Mon day, but only a small amount of business was disposed of. a num ber of judgments having been ta ken. The quarterly or jury term will convene next Monday, the 17th. Quite a number of cases are on the docket, having been transfer red from the superior court. A busy time is expected. After a severe attack of typhoid fever which defied the skill of our best physicians, Mr. John A. Pe terson, Jr., of Ailey, passed away on Thursday morning last. Ho was about 20 years of age and was » I called to lay down the burdens of 'life in the prime of young man -1 hood. Besides his mother, brothers and sister, he leaves a young wife, and an infant son a few months old. The burial took place in the family cemetery on Friday after noon, Rev. Chas. Misses Etta Gibbs and Mary Shurpe visited Mrs. W. B. Jones Saturday afternoon and were pleasantly entertained. S. V. A. WILLIE GILLIS DIES SUDDENLY. We regret to hear of the sad and unexpected death of Mr. Wil lie Gillis at Soperton last week. Mr. Gillis was clerking for Mr. B. A. Howe, and complained of feel ing unwell on retiring at night. A physician was culled and gave him relief, but he was found dead |in bed later. He was the son of Hon. D. D. Gillis, one of Mont gomery’s county commissioners, ; and leaves a wife. Miss Gertrude Mobley, daugh ter of Jesse Mobley of Gum Branch in Liberty county, died in a hos pital in Savannah on Thursday night last from burns received a few days before. Her apron took fire from a fire in the yard. Gov. Terrell has offered SSOO, the largest reward ever offer red by him, for the arrest of the unknown assassin who murdered Chas S. Brooks of Chipley on Dec. 4th. Earthquake shocks are still felt occasionally in California. One in the vicinity of San Luis. Obispo on Thursday night lasted thirty seconds, but no damage was done. The People’s Democratic League of Savunnah has split up into two factions. One side has nominated Geo. W. Tiedeman for mayor,and the other wing has brought out Jacob . Coll ms. A fire at the Atlantic Compress in Macon on Suturday morning destroyed 100 hales of cotton. It wus extinguished by u well-organ ized bucket brigade. Sum Small has again entered the ministry, and is pastor of a church in Atlanta. The Rawlings brothers, Milton, Jesse and Leonard, convicted ot the murder of the Carter children in Lowndes county, have been taken to the convict camps to be gin serving out their life senten ces. Jessse goes to the Cherokee Baick Co. at Macon, Milton to the Baxter Lumber Co. at Fargo, and Leonard to the Babcock Lumber Co. in Miller county. She had come from Dalton, S. C., and in a market basket she carried a baby six days old. She had tramped through country to Dalton. The Salva tion Army people furnished her shelter in Savannah. One white man, five negroes and an Indian were torn into frag ments by the explosion of a box of dynamite the white man was opening in a tunnel on the South and Western Railroad in North Carolina Friday night. A mule and ear were blown out the tunnel and down the mountain side. The car was wrecked hut the mule galloped off to the stable. Daniel G. Dunbar of Chicago fell dead in Thomasville, Ga., on Saturday last. lie had come South for his health. Three hundred pupils have been refused admittance to the public schools ot Americus Monday be cause they could hot show certifi cates of vaccination. Glen wood.
