VOL. XXL NO. 30.
WM. CULBREATH
IS RELEASED.
The preliminary trial of Bill
Culbreath, charged with the mur
der of Ashley Bullard, who has
been in jail some two weeks, was
held here Saturday last. Justice
G. J. Stanford of the Mt. Vernon
district and Justice W. \V. Elliott
of tlife Higgston district presided
at the hearing.
Many witnesses were sworn and
the details of the case gone into
quite thoroughly, but the trial
resulted in the release of Cul
breth. The evidence of reliable
parties showed that Cul breat h
spent the night on which the kill
ing was done at a residence some
distance from the scene of the
murder.
The negro Webster Grimes, who
confessed to participating in the
crime, his story having caused the
arrest of Culbreath, was not put
on trial, and it has been decided
postpone the matter until superi
or court convenes at the adjourn
ed term next month.
We are requested by Justice
Stanford to say that all witnesses
summoned to appear at the pre
liminary trial of Grimes, which
was set for next Saturday, that
they need not attend.
