W. H. TAFT WINS
BY BIG ODDS.
Tuesday’s election passed otV
very quietly in Mt. Vernon, and
from the best information ob
tainable if was the sitme all over
the county.
From the returns it is plainly
seen t hat the election was nothing
short'of a landslide for the Re
publicans. Mr. Taft’s majority
over Bryan is said to be a greater
one than that won by President
Roosevelt.
WOMAN MEETS A
HORRIBLE DEATH.
On Monday afternoon about 2
o’clock Mrs. Claxton, the young
wife of Marcus Claxton, met a
horrible death by burning. Mr.
Claxton lives on the farm of Mr.
E. S. Gibbs, about 15 miles south
of Mt. Vernon, and was away
from home at the time of the aw
ful accident. Mrs. Claxton’scloth
ing probably caught from the
kitchen stove, and the hits ot
burnt doth lying at the well and
around the yard showed t hat she
ran around till overcome by 7 the
flames. Mr. Harold Gibbs, a ru
ral mail carrier, found her lying
upon the front piazza, and aid
was quickly summoned, but the
unfortunate lady only lived to
speak a few words before death re
lieved her sufferings.
A little, child, too small to call
sor aid, was the only one near, and
was found crawling around in the
kitchen. Mrs. Claxton, before
her marriage, was Miss Rountree,
and her parents reside on the west
side of the county. No death
more sad has occurred in this
country, and the bereayed ones
have the sympathy of a large cir
cle of friends.
