MURDERED ON THE STREETS
GF ViDALIA.
Vidalia, Ga., March B.—ln a
difficulty over business matters,
in which the lie and a blow were
passed, W. L. Darby shot and fa
tally wounded O. G. Moore in the
street here this morning, his vic
tim dying this afternoon. Dar
by escaped for a time but later
was caught hiding beneath some
logs in a swamp two miles away.
Both men are well known and,
well to-do and the tragedy and
subsequent chase of the slayer
caused intense excitement here.
Darby is now in the Toombs coun
ty jail at Lyons where he w T as
taken by the sheriff, who led the |
pursuit and aided in effecting the
capture.
It was stated the trouble arose
over an account. It is alleged
that Darby cursed Moore, who,
quick as a flash, slapped the for
mer’s face. An instant later
there was a report and Moore fell
fell to the ground with a bullet
hole in his body'. Darby’s pis
tol was concealed in his coat
pocket and was fired without
being drawn. It was stated that
during his interview with Moore
he kept his hand in his pocket
and fired a moment after his face
was slapped.
Immediately after the shooting
Darby went to his home, mounted
his horse and rode away toward
the Altamalm river. Though he
had two hours start of the sheriff
lie was caught about three hours
after his victim died. Both Dar
by and Moore have families,
