THE WHEAT KING QUITS THE MARKET, Chicago, April 22. —That James A. Patteu, the “Wheat King, has withdrawn from the market after disposingnf hi* heavoy hold ings of May and July wheat, was asserted in many quarters hen; to day. To this assertion verisimili tude was added by the fact that prices have tumbled over 9 rents > during the last week, and that Mr. 1 *atteu h lll >-• •If his sought rest in the fastness of a New Mexico ranch. Whether lie has eliminated him self from t lie so-called “deal” and if so, whet her In* came out with j profit or loss, are questions which can la answer'd only by Mr. Pat ten himself, but in*, according to disputches to-day, dc-s not seen inclined to answer. The session of the Board of Trade • was a sensational one to-day. The 1 first quotations were a startling disappointment to the Imlls. From nearly every point came reports of ! normal or even better crop pros- j peHR. Bears filled the wheat pit in a dense mass and poured forth a j swollen stream of wheat. It. was a tremendous liquidating market. Patten might have been buying secretly through others j than his own house. From him there has come no word that he has changed his views as to the value of wheat. He culls May wheat cheap at $1.29, and if he still thinks so ii is pointed out that the same option at, $1.21 to-day | Was and excellent invest mont. The same was said of July at $1.09;’. These prices are approximately 9 cents under the high price of last F nday. Many a fortune has been wiped out by tlu 1 decline this week. TAFT WILL GO AFTER HARROVIAN RAILWAY LINES. Washington, April 22. —The complaint against the Western railroads, which caused the presi dent to order an investigation,) was made by Senators Smoot and Sullivan and Represent at ive Howell, of Utah who filed a large number of papers. The investi gation, which will be made by the department of justice with the co operation of tlm interstate com merce. commission, will he bused upon the Sherman law. It is alleged that all the inter niountain cities have been sub jected to oppiv'-ivc, unjust, gr-se ly discriminative and unlawful practice eo the part of the rail roads.
