CAPITALISTS ATTACKED BY BISHOP GANDLER, Evergreen, Ala., April 21. — Just before the adjournment of the Methodist conference, Bishop 1 Warren A.Candler sounded a note of warning in the following words : “You have just heard two speeches on the subject of the i duty you owe to your educational institutions. lam not talking to Methodists only, but to baptists, ; Presbyterians and Episcopalians. 1 want to impress upon you that your educational interests are j imperilled. “Andrew Carnegie and John D. Jtoekteller have separately con tributed an immense amount of ] money, which will, in the nggr<- j gate, amount to $08,(X)O,00D, and then purpose is to dominate the educational interests of this en tire country. They are seeking to get it under their control, not only the denominational colleges of ihis countrv, Imt they are also trying to direct the non-sectarian and the state institutions, and by t be bribe of this enormous sum ot money, they alreudy partially succeeded. “These northerners are coming south to touch the southern bar barians now and strange theories. I want us to say to them right now, and to John 1). Hock feller especially that we do not want any of their ideas, any of their theories, nny of their advanced civilization, any of their sugges tions, and not a greasy penny of their money. We wjll remain in our barbarity, and wo will enforce our laws, and inculcate our ideas without any impertinent sugges tions from them. Tell them to stay at home and teach their own people; teach their juries to punish crime, which they are not doing and let us alone. \\ c will and do, punish crimes. Two mur ders were convicted in feuuossee the other day, and they convicted the night riders, too, but three murders m New York and two in Boston go unwhipped of justice. “We do not want their money, because they are hostile to the family relation which liod him self established, and would sub stitute therefore a system of froo loveiam. The professors 111 these nnw-idcu colleges also teach a socialistic doctrine that has never had tolerance in the south.” Bishop Candler’s address pro dared a profound sensation. - ■„ ■ , „■ , n. D. Cowart, • 11G Bull St. Savannah, Ga. I THE MONTGOMERY MONITOR—TIirRSDAY, APRIL 29, 19(49. CHILDREN THAT ARE CRIPPLED MORALLY, We spend more money on harm less afflicted children in Georgia than we do on the children with a moral twist, capable of being straightened and made self-sup porting, law-abiding men and wo men. That is the substance of the re cent pleas published in The Con stitution hi behalf of the .Juvenile Protective Association. A fifth paper published today shells con vincing light on a subject very close to the public weal. Preventive and curative medi cine has made great strides. The healing sharpness of the surgeon’s knife, the salutary influence of ease and relaxation and the free air of God’s great open, have led doctors nowadays to doubt if any save the most drastic of childish physical misfortunes are incura ble. Yet what are we doing for the children who, as victims of en vironment and heredity, have m them the germs of criminality, ! blasted and unproductive lives anil j the disastrous role of menace to community? Rather little, when the impor tance of the subject and the ready response of the child to proper treatment are considered. It has been demonstrated, be yond rejoinder, that an over whelming majority of children with wayward tendencies can be reclaimed. All that is needed is close association for a term of years with militant righteousness, the reconstruction of moral na tures upon a sane basis and the revivification of the conscience. The society that does not take aggressive cognizance of these facts is not only culpable morally ; it is also neglecting the means to lessen a sure tax upon the public treasury and the public safety.— Atlanta Constitution.
