STATE TREASURY.
/ that while there is ■

the expenses of the
, for instance. It j
all belongs to special
> sinking fund and
ds. But we don’t see
tov. Smith is to blame
condition of affairs. He
spend any of the money
sn’t appropriated, and, as
we are informed, his ad- j
ration wasn’t- guilty of any
uilar extravagance. It mav
at the Legislature during his
iof ollice wasn’t careful in
ling appropriations as it might
/e been —that is, all the money
appropriated may not have
jen in sight —but there is no
barge that it was guilty of ex
travagance.
The trouble seems to be that j
Mr. Smith undertook to make it
appear that he turned over to his
successor a treasury that was in
a particularly good condition, and
that when Gov. Brown got the
figures he found that/ he hadn t
enough money at his command to
pay current expenses, to say noth
ing about the expanses of the
Legislature. It doesn’t appear
that he got the figures for the
purposes of discrediting the state
ment of his predecessor, hut to
get the Legislature to pass a reso
lution releasing some of tile
state’s money that is t ied up.
Therefore there doesn’t seem t.o
be any need for efforts on the
part of anybody to make it ap
pear that Mr. Smith left the
treasury in a bad condition or
that he left it in a particularly
fine condition —much hotter than
it was when ha took ollice. It is
all a matter as to how you look
at it.
There is no doubt that there is
a big sum of near beer money
/.bat can lie made available by a
involution of the Legislature,'
twnu’e that $200,000, hut it may go
against thf grain of the average
prohibition member to have to j
take his per diei* from a fund
jraised bv a tax on near bee/ 1 .
'/’here is no doubt that this
pie-ai .W,c fund comes in handy at
this t-jififi. Without it the Gov
ernor would have to borrow mon
ey not only to pay tkfi school
/.euchors, hut also the expenses u( j
(Oh* Legislature. It there werej

in the fact that they furnished
the means for pulling tfjn ot-aJU

ASHBURN CAMP MEETING.
The regular Wesleyan Camp
Meeting held annually at Ash
burn, Ga.,will be run this year as
an United Free and Wesleyan
Methodist Camp Meeting on July
22 to August 1. There will lie min
isters present from both adminis
trations, and as both stand for
the same doctrines the preaching
will be as usual on the line of
“the old paths.” A thorough re
pentance, that need not he repent
ed of, a definite conversion, a
walking in the light and a subse
quent. sanctitication that makes
growing m grace easy and natur
al will be emphasized and set
forth as the purchase of Christ s
blood for all mankind. 11 you need
any of the blessings, or want t.o
help others in obtaining them,
COME !
There being so much loose and
erroneous holiness teaching abroad
in the laud these latter days, it is
proposed to conduct a Bible Ins
titute each morning of the ten
davs at the Camp Meeting, at
| which Scriptural Holiness andoth
er neglected Inble themes will lie
expounded and taught, therefore
it is urged that every Wesleyan
and Free Methodist Evangelist
pastor and licentiate in the states
of Georgia and Florida lay all
other business aside and make
sure to be present. Herein, by
the help of God, fail not. For
these preachers and other invited
workers, free hoard will be pro
vided. It is required, however,
that each bring along t.lieir own
bedding—-just put some cover, a
I pillow and on empty bed tick in
your trunk or valise and bring it
along as baggage; there will lie
plenty of straw on hand to fill
the tick. To the public generally
and all who are not entitled to
free hoard, there will lie a hoard
ing house open on the grounds
where board and lodgings can be
obtained at sixty cents per day.
Mr. W. 11 Leahy, Mr. C. JL

Arrangements are all made, yet

THE ELGi:C MARBLES.
1 1 History of tha Greek ArC.Tr««*ures In
the S.itish Museum.
I Thomas Bruce was descended
1 from Ring Robert Bruce of Scot
land and was only a chibl when he
, ] succeeded to the title*of Lord Elgin.
His preparatory btuJ.es were made
•] at Harrow and at tLe Westminster
. school, and he thsui went to the
Scotch university of St. Andrews.
! From here he went to Baris to study
; I international law and then prooeed
• j cd to Germany to learn military sci
j once.
This long and careful education
. ] to lit him for his high duties was
then considered as completed, and
1 : Lord Elgin entered the army and
- rose to the rank of general. But
, his studies had developed a ts te for
diplomacy, and he left the army and
went to Brussels as envoy, ilu n to
Berlin and finally, in 1799, to Con
i stuntinople as envoy extraordinary
I at the porte. At this court Lord
Elgin remained for three years.
During this period the idea suggest
'' ed itself to him of getting .posses
-1 sion of some of the treasures of
I Greek art at Athens to transport
j them to England.
At an expense of more than
$250,000 lie \ias able to get many
of (he most beautiful and valuable
1 of the original marbles of the Par
thenon, the work of the great sculp
. tor Phidias and his pupils.
The English nation bought this
remarkable collection, paying the
Earl of Elgin only SIBO,OOO, so he
practically contributed $70,000 to
the British museum, where these
1 marbles were placed in a special
apartmeftt known as the Elgin room.
There was a great deal of bitter
feeling when these were taken away
from Athens, and the earl was called
' a “vandal” and almost a robber.
Many English people deplored their
removal, and Lord Byron was par
ticularly sarcastic in the matter.
At the time these were taken
j from Athens the splendid ruins were
j being sadly neglected. Their re
j movql created a desire in modern
i Athens to preserve her monuments,
] and since that time the Greek ar-
I cluieologieal society has made ev
ery effort to guard and protect the
precious remains of the glorious
period of their country’s history.
While there is a distinct loss in
not seeing the Greek marbles in
their original pqsitions, it is cer
tainly a privilege for fho English
ppoplp and visiters from nil parts of
the world to study them in the Brit
ish museum and to have the v&lua
| hie plaster ousts of them which we!
! have in our art museums.
The horses of the frieze in the El
j gin collection are marvels of light
i riess and lifelike form. The veins
i on their faces and legs seem to be
| actually distended with the blood in
circulation. They seen) to fliOY*
and to roll their eyes,
So long as there is a love for or-:
tistie work and a reverence for j
genius the Elgin marbles will be
counted the chief treasures of the j
British museum.—Boston Globe.
