Mt. V crnon, (»cor"ia. Thursday Morning, Dec. 1909. *
THE HEALTH OF THE SOUTH.
The South lias been menaced hv
malaria, by yellow fever, and now
science tells ns that there are two
other diseases that require caution
and attent ion—pellagra him! the
hookworm.
Science is slow in reaching con
clusions and even when they are
finally slated they hove to ho ac
cepted with some deductions.
Mr. Rockefeller hits given one
million dollars to he used in inves
tigating what is known n« the
hookworm disease. This oflVr of
Mr If/Kikofeller has been received
with public criticism I rout s<>iii>-
qliaiters. bill we IllUSt Ixlievc t till t
it is because of u inmeonoeption
of the work which bus to he done
and lor which this money will
supply tln - means.
It is said that the suggestion
that there is such n disease in the
South is a reflection upon tin*
Southern people. It is no more a
reflection t him it is to say that
malaiiu exists in the South, or
that typhoid fever exists in Wash
ington and Pennsylvania
What the Southern people meal
is to know whether nr not this die
ease do** exist. V number of
eminent physicians suv* it doe*.
A number of newspapers and
preachers say it does not.
It tile disease does exist, then
ih< investigation of it by expert
physicians will demonstrate the
tact, and when that tact is de
monstrated it will la* compara
tively easy to ciad'cate it It it
does not exist, this investigation
w ill make that tact plain.
That is all Mu re is in the hook
worm controversy. To say that
the gilt 1* an l input at inn upon the
Month and to deny with anger and
bitterness that Southern people
are dirt outers do*Ai not in nnv de
gree advance the health conditions
of the South.
The hookworm does not lead to
dirt-eating .except in extreme
cases. It 1* one ut the rarest and
latent mumlest at ions.
Hut th e seeds of the disease, ac
cording to tie l in,ol of science, are
widely scattered and nminv men
ami women who helleVo they lire
run down, whose neighbors believe
they ar<» simply lazy, are the vic
tims ot t his disease, mid when the
disease 1* eradicated thesd men
and women will become active
agents in the development of the
Southern States.
Whether tliii- is a fairy tale of
science or whether it is an actual
condition cannot he determined
t v newspaper* or pfiaehet*. It
must In- determined by the medi
