BY-PRODUCTS ON THE FARM. The modern manufacturer ha hem distinguished by tie' use of by-products—that is, hv the util ization of things that were form erly considered waste. In the great packing houses of Chicago i every drop of blood, every bone, every atom is utilized, turned to account. It lias recently been announced that a chemist has discovered the means of extracting alcohol from the wood used for making paper and that he has benefited instead of injuring the paper. He has Ins alcohol for his profit, and will ■ make ultimately a large reduction in the cost of paper it his expec tations are realized. The farmer ought to see what' he can make out of by-products, out ot the fence corners, out ol she wood lot, out of the garden, i out of the orchard. Every farmer should have a number of nut trees, especially in the South should the farmer plant pecans. He may not liv>- to see the full benefits of it. but hie children will rise up and call him blessed. Plant nut trees. They will not require much attention, but a lit tle attention will be richly re - v aided. Piant fruit trees. We do not mean plant an orchard. The pro fits of an orchard depend upon local conditions, soil climate and market. We think there is room for a grout many orchards in the South, but we mean now that the i farmer who is not going into fruit raising as a business ought to plant fruit trees in order that he , may supply the needs of his faun-. Iv and have a surplus to market. We use these merely as illustra tions ot our meaning. There are many ways by which the income of a farm can be increased by a little thought and by winch the interests of every person on the farm can be deepened, by giving 1-0 each boy and girl something for his or her very own. It you are not going to raise hogs on a large scale raise them on a small , scale. If you are uot going to raise chickens for the market raise chickens for your own table. You farm that you may live. The far mer ought to live better t han any body else. This docs not mean', that Ins table ought to groan tin- ' tier all varieties of rich food, but he ought to have a table that i ttbuudaot with the good things; that he himself can raise.— Ex. /• _ . Higgston. Np. djml CorrfMpondc'ntitt. Mrs. Lola Adams, of Fitzgerald, visited her father, N. T. Way, near this place. Roland Elliott has returned from Hirtnon*. Ga., where he had been at work. W. H. McQueen and family /■pent Monday wit li John McQueen near here. M iss Josie Thompson has re turned from Mcßae, where she | visited her sister, Mrs. Redmond.' We are very much in need of, rain: the wells are going dry.
