BRITTIAN DECLINES
SHORTER PRESIDENCY,
Professor M. L. Brittian will
remain as superintendent < f
the Fulton county public
schools, a position he has filled
with distinguished ability and
brilliant success for eight years.
He has declined the presidency
of Shorter college, Rome, Ua., to
which he was recently elected.
Since the presidency of Shorter
college was offered him.great pres
sure has been brought to bear to
keep him in Atlanta and Fulton
county. A petition was recently
presented to tho Fulton county
board of education signed by every
one of the 95 county teachers pro
testing against Professor Bnt
tian’s resignation being accepted:
and asking that he be retained.
Professor Brittian does not deny
that he has declined the call to
Shorter, but says that all announ
cements must come from the trus
tees of that college.
When Professor Brittian was
elected to the superintendency of
the county schools in 1901, there
was a total school fund available
of only $15,000. Under his ad
ministration the fund has increas
ed to $59,000. The increase was
brought about by two campaigns
for local taxation which were suc
cessful largely through his efforts.
The school term since 1901 lias
been lengthened from five to nine
months and the salaries of teach
ers last year alone were three
tames as much as the total for all
school purposes when ha entered
office.
During the past eight years S7O
- has been spent lor the erection
of school houses, of which $40,000
was raised by subscriptions from
individuals chiefly in response to
appeals from the superintendent.
Professor Brittian is a textbook
author of note and is prominent
in the work of the Baptist church,
of which he is a member,
LAURENS MAN HAS LARGE FAMILY.
Mr. Joseph M. Mullis of this
county is being congratulated over
the birth of twins.
Mr. Mullis seventy-one years of
age and the birth of the twins
make him the father of tmenty
eeveu children.
He is an honest, hard-working
citizen and does not believe in race
suicide. He is proud of the dis
tinction of being the father of
more children than anv other cit
izen in the county. Pie is a brot
her of Mr. W. 11. Mullis, who is
the father of more than twenty
children. —Dublin Courier Dis
