FINAL PROOF OF LIFE ON MARS, SAYS LOWELL, Chicago.—Announcement of final proof that the planet Mars is inhabited was made by Profes sor Percival Lowell, the Martian expert and director of an observa tory at Flagstaff, Ari., to Chicago astronomical circles. Professor Lowell announced that he had seen a new canal spring into being last summer, showing, he declared, that it had been just completed by the Mar tians. Water had just been turn ed into it and vegetation bad sprung up in a hitherto uninhabi table part of the great desert, which comprises most of the planet’s surface. Not only did he see the new canal, but he photographed it, he asserted. Previous photographs of this region, made as late as last May, failed to show any trace of it. The fact that it developed be tween May and September, when it was first observed, Professor Lowell regarded as positive proof that it was artificial, and there fore that living beings exist there. Professor Lowell made this an nouncement to Professor S. W. Burnham of the Yerkes observa tory. The new canal, one thou sand niies long, extends south east from the region of vegetation known as Syrtis Major through the great plain of Libya, he said— “ Professor Lowell’s discovery is of the utmost importance,” said Professor Burnham. “It seems to be the strongest con firmation yet obtained of the be lief that there are living, intelli gent beings on Mars. His theorj', that the markings on the planet are canals and that these canals are the work of living beings, is the only one that fits all the known facts.” THE SECTIONAL HONEYMOON. Miss Low came down to break fast, but no preparation for that meal greeted tier eyes. After waiting a few minutes, she rang the bell impatiently, and immedi ately a white-frocked, middle aged negress responded “Why, Martha, what does this mean,” she asked. Martha twisted and untwisted her hands. “I’se married, honey.” “But you promised to be here as usual; didn’t you? “I sho’ did, Miss Low, honey, an’ I’se here, ain’t I?” “You are, indeed. But where is breakfast, and aren’t you wear ing your wedding dress?” “1 is to be sho’,” Marth ac knowledged, smoothing the frock with growing confusion. “Then, for heaven’s sake, take it off and prepare breakfast.” “Yas’m honey. I’ll get you breakfast; it’s what I done come for, an’ to ’splain, as long as you gwine to have company next week, I’ll take my trip now.” Again Marth’s hands went to twisting. “My wedding trip, honey,” she added, hanging her head. “I declare.Marth.l'm beginning to believe you are story telling. You told me positively Jake couldn’t get off on account of that delegation and their being short of waiters.” “So I did, honey, Miss Low, an’ it’s de gospel trufe, so we done ’eluded to spend our honeymoons separate, an’ Jake ’vised me to go now, as he s’poses to go when dey ain’t so busy.” |ANNOUNCEMENTS| FOR CLERK SUPERIOR COURT: 1 hereby announce inv candidacy for the ■ dice of derk of tlio Superior Court ol Mont gomery county, subject to the action ot the | Democratic primary.
