' KILLED IN MISSISSIPPI.
response to a telegram an
nouncing the death of his nephew,
Mr. D. M. Currie left Monday for
McHenry, Miss. The unfortunate
man is Mr. Ben D. Currie, weli
known in this county, and a
nephew of Dr. M. L. Currie of
Vidalia and Mr. D. M. Currie of
Ailey.
It i 9 not known how his death
occurred, but it is supposed that
he was shot in un encounter with
another man. He was about
thirty-five years of age, and his
untimely death is regretted b\
many friends and relatives in this
county.
COMMITTEE IS FAVORABLE TO
ERECTING SHAFTS IN LIBERTY.
Washington, D. C., April 12. —
The House Committee on Library
has agreed favorably to report the
bill introduced by Congressman
Edwards asking for an appropria
tion for monuments to Gens.
Screven and Stewart at Midway
Cemetery, in Liberty county,
Georgia, and the report of the
committee is expected to be sub
mitted to the Iljuse in the next
tew days.
Mr. Edwards is very happy over
the prospect ot obtaining this
favorable report, and says that
even if he gets no more this ses
sion thwu the favorable report he
will have won a great victory and
that the monuments will be had
in next session
Congressman William M. How
ard of Georgia is a member of this
committee and has been very ac
tive in his efforts to secure a fav
orable report upon Mr. Edwards’
bill.

Angel entered the home of Mr and
Mrs W M Richie and bore away to
the heavenly home their little
daughter Helen, aged 5. Little
Helen had a sweet disposition and
I everybody loved her. We join im-j
nierous friends of the bereaved pa
rents in extending sympathy.
' Helen was a member of the little
: folks’ society L T L which is
i deeply grived at her loss. Weep
not, dear friends; she is not dead
; but sweetly sleeping on Jesus’
| breast. We will understand some
day why it was that grim Death’s I
icy hand clasped in its cold em
brace the one we loved so much.

TWO MEET IN ROAD
ONE KILLS THE OTHER.
Alma, (la., April o.—Lester
Hampton was stabbed to death by
Andrew J. Thomas three miles
north of Alma yesterday. Thom
as met Hampton near the yard
gate of a Mr. Hood. A dispute
arose and the lie was passed be
tween the two. Thomas alighted
from his buggy and Hampton from
his wagon. A few blows were(
passed and Hampton was stabbed
in the lelt hreast and death fol
; lowed an hour later.
J. E. Rich issued a warrant for|
Thomas and the officers went in j
i pursuit of him.

WRECK OF TRAIN.
Ramos, La., April ( J. —A child
;six years old saved the Southernj
Pacific Flyer from dashing around !
a curve into a burning bridge here
yesterday by flagging the train.
The bridge is a few miles out of
this city and caught fire from
burning grass. A sick woman
who saw the bridge burning, but |
was unable to leave her bed, call
ed the child m and sent her out
with a flag. She reached the track
just in time. The tram was de
toured. The little girl was kissed
by nearly every woman on the
Flyer when they learned of
j their escape.

FITZGERALD HAS A
DISASTROUS FIRE.
Fitzgerald, Ga.,l April 11. —
Twenty thousand dollar fire in
Fitzgerald started today at eleven
thirty a. in.,from a match used to
light, a cigarette being thrown on
the floor, entirely consuming nine
buildings with part of contents,
and badly burning three horses.
That the loss was not greater is
entirely owing to the efficient,
work of the fire department sup
ported bv citizens who removed
part of contents of buildings.
The fire started in the Pepsi-
Cola Bottling Works and before
the alarm could be turned in had
spread to the livery barns and the
Enterprise newspaper plant and
ollices, Graham’s grocery and sev
eral houses.

MONEY FOR TEACHERS.
Atlanta, Ga., April 12. War
rants were drawn on the treasurer
today to the amount of $192,433.-
10 to be distributed among the
common school teachers of the
stute. Os this sum, $29,529.04
will be applied to the 1909 school
fund, a balance of which is still
due. The remainder $163,004.12
will he applied on the 1910 fund.

TEACHERS EXAMINATION-
The annual examination of
Common School Teachers, will he
held on the 17t,h mid 18th of June,
this year. There will he no
change in the hooks prescribed
for reading. The two used last
year were I )insmore’s Teaching a
District School and Dutton’s
School Management. The Teach
er’s Manual and School Law will,
as usual, have questions based
upon them.
Tim examination will open at 8
o’clock each morning. This April

PROCEEDINGS OF BOARD
OF EDUCATION.
April 0. 1910.
The county Board of Education
met today, with all the members
present. The minutes of lust meet
ing were read und approved.
J. A. Curry and M. Foskeveame
before the Board, asking that a
seined be granted in the* commu
nity between Orianna and Pendle
ton's Creek. The school was grant
ed oil condition that a house lie
furnished for use during the first
term without cost t* * the Board,
and on the further consideration
that the school be made perma
nent. if the attendance during the
first term warranted same.
Several patrons of the school Ht
Austin and a committee from the
Masonic lodge of said place came
before the Board, stating that it
was necessary to build a new
school-house, and that if satisfac
tory arrangements could be made,
the Masons and school trustees
Would build together, using the
lirst lloor for class-room and the
second story for lodge purposes.
Upon motion T. A Peterson, VV.
A. Peterson and A. B. Hutcheson
were appointed to meet with the
school trustees and the lodge
members at Austin on Friday,
April Bth, to consider plans, etc.,
for the above building and report
to the Board at Hie next meeting.
Archie T. Miller and M. H.
Newsome presented a petition ask
ing the removal of the school from
Lot hair to a proposed locution
near the Milieu watermill.
Several of the patrons of Crook
ed Run school were present, ask
ing the Board to aid them in
building a new school-house. The
Board was asked for aid on a new
school-house to lie limit near Jno.
P. Nixon’s farm.
All the above requests for aid
Wei**-* passed until the next meet
ing of the Bourd und the petition
ers asked to report the amounts
subscribed for said building in
their respective communities.
The Board passed an order au
thorizing the county school com
missioner to pay J A. Glegg $7 <X)
per month for the use of a horse
uni wagon to take pupils to and
from Union school. Commissions
were ordered issued all the school
trustees elected on the 4th day of
last. February.
I ln* Board adjourned until the
next, regular meeting, to be held
on the lirst Wednesday in May.
