A remarkably intelligent dog that leads a blind man about the streets has attracted much atten tion in this city during the past few days. The dog is an English setter, white and liver colored and is a beautiful animal of fine pedigree. His name is “Joe Rodfield,” and Ins master’s name is G. S.Saville. who has been totally blind for many years. The dog is provided with a shoul j der harness, to which is attached 1 a strong strap. This strap the I blind man holds in his hand. 1 while the dog leads him about over the city. The dog understands the spoken j j commands of his master as though he were possessed of human m- I tolligence. The blind man says, I “.Joe, w<> will visit the stores to- I day.” The dog starts out and j goes into every store, not missing j a door. Street by street, first I one side and then the other, he j 1 covers the business section of th I city, leading Ins master into every , I store. I When the dog comes to a street I crossing, he slackens his pull on I the strap, which gives his I master notice that they have j come to a curbing. As soon u l the blind man steps down the 1 the strap is tightened again, and I is kept tight until the other «ule j walk is reached, when the slacken j ed strap again gives the blind 1 man notice that here is another I curbing. The same tactics are | followed by the dog whenever he I he comes to a kind of a step. I Joe will not follow anyone but l his master. Let anyone else take I I the strap and try to lead the dog! I away, and the dog will not budge I mi inch. i When the blind man wishes t<> I walk through the streets without l visiting th.* stores, he will say, l “Well, Joe we will not go into the l stores today,” and on that day 1 the dog will keep in the middle I of the sidewalk. | So intelligent is the dog, and I so faithful to his master that tin blind mail can go wherever lie wishes, the dog'acting as his guide wherever ho goes. The dog ha led his master from the Atlantic j to the Pacific ocean, through thirty-four states and a part of Mexico, without accident or in jury. Stories of hie accomplish ments have been published in over one thousand newspapers throughout the country. He i- a ; II descendant of the great ( ’otiiil | Gladstone, the greatest English j I setter ever brought to tlie l Anted States.—Albany Herald - BE HONEST. If there is one maxim which i [ ought to sink deep into tin* heart j of the young it is to he honest, j ! says the Dawson News. A miserable man must be he j who owes another and does ( not pay him from lack of in j teution. This misery becomes j more acute when the dishonest ! one is. compelled to face the de frauded day after lay. He un dergoes ten time- as much sutler- j j ing for this offense as the thing is | worth. | Look ot the tainted • bank otJi j cers throughout the country and j the lawmakers at state capitals j with tainted reputations. What j wouldn't they give if they had I the power to be back where they were before the breath of scandal , j had forever disgraced them? It I is too late for these offenders, j They risked all, and lost all. | Young man, a- you take your < i place in the ranks of the indus trial toilers remember that ludu— j tv is as necessary as industry to succeed. Thevery in whatever form never pays, and while you may not win riches by hont -t v alone you can win the regard of your employers and the respect of your fellows and retain and in crease the affection of your pa rents. w hich is far more desirable than the more possession of wealth.
