BETTING READY FOR ROOSEVELT’S COMING. Iu the opinion of Mr. Henry Watterson, editor of the Louis ville Courier Journal, the Ameri can people should get reudy for the home ('omihn of Theodore' 1 Roosevelt —should make up heir minds whether or not t h*-> want him in the White House again. He says that Col. Roosevelt is “the most startling figure who has appeared iu the world since Napo leon Bonaparte,” which Mr. Wat* terson thinks is a ‘ circumstance not without significance and por tent.” It is Mr. Watterson’s view, ap parently, that there is going to be a mighty effort to elect Col. Roose velt Preeideut in 1912, and that it is time for people to consider the question whether or not they want him. If they decide in his favor it will be an admission that they consider representative govern ment a failure and that they have come to the conclusion that a one man government is preferable to it because it would afford the means of getting rid . i t; -vus which cannot be successlully dealt with by “the slow processes of constitutional procedure.’ Mr. Watterson points out that if Col. Roosevelt should be made President again he would be a des pot, a benevolent one, however, who would interpret the law to suit himself, and who would put bis interpretation into deeds. When he W’as President it is a fact that his respect for the law wasn't so great as tc prevent him from doing what he thought ought to be done, even if lie didn’t have the support of the law and the constitution If he should be chosen President again by a big majority wouldn’t he interpret that action of the people as mean ing that they have so much confi dence in him that they would sus tain him in doing anything he chose to do in dealing with condi tions of which there hus been, and still is, a great deal of complaint? And it is well know n that he doesn’t havn to be urged to do things for which there is no legal or constitutional authority if he bblieves that he has the support of public sentiment. Is it a fact that the rulers of Europe are expecting that Col. Roosevelt wih be elected Presi dent again and that he will exer-; cise greater power than any prev ious President —that, in fact, re presentative government in this country will undergo a marked change in the direction of the one man power? Mr. Watterson ap parently thinks so, and also that the expectation is finding expres sion iu the honors that are being showered on him iu the countries he is visiting. Mr. Watterson’s article is a sensational one, but it is calcula ted to cause the American people to do a great deal of thinking. There is no doubt that the Re publican party will nominate Col. RooseveP in 1912 if it thinks it cannot re-elect Mr Taft , be cause it would latln r risk having a despot in th< M l e H u-> ton give up the control < t !>• a 1 vla - ment, but it is far fri n. certain that Col.Rooseveltciui'l - ed, popular as he seems t<> be. Il the people should get the idea firm ly fixed in their minds that his election would mean the death of representative government they wouldn’t hesitate to check his ambition in the most emphatic way. While it is true that there are evils that Congress doesn’t seem to deal with as promptly as it. should, and while Mr. Taft doesn’t seem to have accomplished all that was expected of him, the people would much prefer to take the chance of having the evils of which thev complain corrected by means strictly within the law than to take the risk of Having Cel. Roosevelt exercise power not con ferred upon the head of the nation by the constitution and laws. — Savannah News.
