A SPLENDID TRIBUTE TO AN ABLE MAN, Washington, D. C., July 11— | Savogard, in this week’s letter, i| says of a well-known Ge'orgia!| member of Congress: There is a gentleman in Con- j gress from the Eleventh district. William Gordon Brantley, who adds materially to the character and the intelligence of that body. He is a leading lawyer of the Ju diciary Committe, and a strong debater on the door of the House, j His immediate predecessor was ; Henry G. Turner, one of the greatest, and 1 believe the purest, I man 1 ever saw. “While a thorough Democrat, Brantley's field is the discussion of legal propositions rather than political. Like John G. Carlisle, his mind is eminently judicial, and when he appears on the hus- 1 tings, it is an address he makes, j rather than a stump speech, for he never fails to say something that compels reflection in the minds of his hearers. “Like Judge Turner, Judge Brantley is a serious-minded, j thoughtful and profound man.! With him, service in Congress is j no sinecure, no holiday. He re-i gards himself as the trustee of! an express trust and would treat it with no more levity than he: would a duty as judge on the bench. “Judge Brantley stands high m Congress, a man who will never attempt to set the Potomac on fire, but one whose opinions are eagerly sought after and highly esteemed. He harks back to the old South.’’ FAILED OF APPOINTMENT, BUI ASKS FOR VOTES, Atlanta, .June 14. —K. July 14.—The first boll of open cotton in Brooks county and, so far as known, the first m Georgia this year, was brought m this morning by Mr. tileason. a tenant on the E. J, Young plantation, jt was a perfect boll and came from a field planted about two weeks earlier than the general planting > time. A good deal of this cotton was killed by the frost but Mr. Gleason has a very good stand of it. As to cotton generally, some of the farmers are depressed by the the poor prospects and say the crop is fully oO per cent. oIT, the late frost succeeding drouth and! recent rains having played havoc. } The hog and hominv crop, how- j ever, will be unusually fine.
