GOVERNMENT AROUSED
AT BLACKHANOERS.
Chicago, March 531. Following
two demonstrations of the Black
Hand -one against United States
Judge K. M. Landis and the
other against W. P. Dannenburg,
the government’s special Black
Hand investigator Federal de- i
tectives were started today on
what promises to be the most
relentless war on the society ever
inaugurated in America.
A cylindrical object, in the
form of an infernal machine, was
found just outside the door of
Judge Landis’ chambers late
yesterday evening and detectives
declared that it had been placed
there by agents of the Chicago
Mafia. Judge Landis was “mark
ed for death” by the Mafia, ac
cording to an anonymous letter
received by him two days ago.
Alt ho government agents were
inclined to laugh at the supposed
bomb, therf? is an undercurrent,
of apprehension and rumors were,
renewed that William J. Burns,
the detective who uncovered the
the wholesale graft plots in San i
Francisco, would be called into!
the case here.
The fears were augmented to-;
day by the receipt of a threaten- j
ing letter from the Black Hand 1
to Dannenburg. Altho his pres-j
ence in Chicago was supposed to
be a secret, the detective was
warned to cease his investigations
if he wanted to live.
Several supposed memliers of
the Mafia have been arrested by
the Chicago police, but they have
not been connected with any of
the operations of the society.
Philip Purpura, one of the
prisoners, confessed today that
he had sent a Black Hand letter
to Max Rice, demanding SI,OOO.
He said he had instructed Rice
where to put the money. Pur
pura was arrested when he pick
ed up a fake package placed
\\ here he had directed.

GORDON MC DONALD PARDONED.
Gordon McDonald, who was
convicted of killing Collin Cheney
and Hersehel Burse about five
years ago, near Cochran, and
was sentenced to 99 years in the
penitentiary by Judge Martin of
Pulaski Superior Court, was par
doned by Governor Brown last
Saturday and is now at home
with his father at Lumber City.
He is a son of J. W. McDonald, a
former citizen of Pulaski county,
but now in the employ of the
Southern Railway at Lumber
City.
Mr. McDonald’s untiring efforts i
to secure a pardon ever since his!
son has been incarcerated has at
last met with success, and we
certainly hope that this son will
make a good law abiding citizen]
and ever remain a pleasure and
a solace to the father who was so
loyal and untiring in his efforts
to secure his liberty. Cochran

A NEW IMPETUS FOR Ti- SO J Mi.
The session of the -S'.o'hern
| Commercial Congr.-ss v.ivrh "•■as
I held in Atlanta should p.-u\ of
! inestimable value to the South’s
!future progress.
The mere mention of the i icr
jthut the Congress will spend
i $500,000 fn thoroughly advorii.s
jing this section of the nation and
jin bringing it to the attention of
the entire world, is sufficient to
I show that the efforts of the ad
! vertising scheme adopted will
] far-reaching ari d e H'e cl i .e .
| Though the Congress has ended
I its session, the work which it
I has undertaken has hardly begun.
One noteworthy feature of the
{advertising campaign to he in
j augurated is that it will extend
‘over a period of five years. The
I wisdom of thus extending the
j publicity that is to he given this
I section is at once obvious. In
j stead of spending the advertis
ing appropriation in one lump
sum and then leaving no further
word said, this fund will be used
to repeat and drive home the
truth that the South is the most
flourishing section of the nation
and that its future is most prom
ising.
Every branch of the industrial
and commercial life of the South
will be thoroughly and skillfully
handled in every form of legiti
mate and profitable publicity.
Every inquiry that is received as
a result of this publicity will be
recorded and carefully followed
up until some results are achiev
ed in each individual case. The
thoroughness and soundness of
such a plan should recommend
itself to every business man in
the South. There can be no
doubt that far-reaching good will
result.
It furnishes another notable in
dication that the South is coming
into its own in every line of
worthy endeavor. No section of
the nation has advanced so rapid
ly in recent years as the South.
The new *plan of the Southern
Commercial Congress will keep
alive and increase the sound and
vital growth that has been shown
thus far. Times-Recordor.
