WANTS TO BE NEXT GOVERNOR. HON. .JOHN M. SLATON. John .11. Sla l ii hatt issued tlm for ! trial jiuiouiiceiiii’iii of tils intention lo inuke Hu' rail lor governor. lie says that ho hail desired to keep his candidacy in the background until lifter tile presidential primary, but that pressure of letters from ait over tie- state persuaded him jt. was his duty to make public, now, win liter lie would he a candidate. lb- Indicates that, ho will not open, campaign headuuarlers until after Lliu , presidential primary. As to liis platform and policies, the I nnnouncetnent does not go into detail, simply stilling in a general "ay that lie stands on ins record in the house aml senate and as acting governor, that lie favors a businesslike adtninis trillion of the state's affairs with spe cial support for tile agricultural and educational interests, amt that lie will seek the nomination on the time lion oreil principle of the county unit plan. This makes two announced candi dates tmw In the Held, lion. Thomas (). Hudson, resigned commissioner of agriculture, having formally become a candidate several days ago. Mr. Slahfli will, with the ending of 1912, have rounded out 17 years of service in the general assembly. The first 13 years of this long term he was a member of the house and the last four years he has been in the senate. lie was chairman of tin' house judiciary committee for seven years and was speaker of the house fin four years. During Mr. Slaton's entire four years in tin* senate he has been pres blent of that body, lie nSFcr had op position in his races for either speak er of the house or president of the senate. Dor 7T> days, the interim between Governor lioko Smith's resignation nml Governor Jos> pit M. brown's in auguratlon, Mr Slaton filled the gov ernor's chair. Mr. Slaton's ability as the presid ing officer In both the house and sen ate lias been generally recognized, ills handling of the stormy debate in the house during the discussion of the prohibition bill in 19(18 was con stdered so able and impartial that both sides introduced resolutions com mending him. Mr. Slaton's announcement follows: To the People of Georgia: The wide ly published report that 1 will be a candidate for governor subject to the August primary has brought to me letters from all parts of the state ask ing for a definite declaration of my Intention. It was not my desire to make any formal announcement until nf’er the presidential primary, being impressed, ns 1 am. with the idea that tlie people pr« ferred to consider one campu n at a time. So general, however, has become the demand for a statement that 1 believe it is proper for me to say now that 1 will he a candidate, and at the appropriate time 1 shall enter upon a vigorous presentation of my views on the issues which may lie Involved in the race. My record as a member of the gen oral assembly, ns presiding officer of each house for two terms and as act ing governor for a brief period, is an open book. If elected. 1 will continue to do all In my power to serve the best Interests of the state. As governor tt will bo my special endeavor to give the state an econom ical and businesslike administration of its affairs: to see. particularly, that the agricultural and educational Inter ests receive that liberal support nec essary *o general progress: that every dollar expended on each department of government shall yield to the people a dollar’s worth of efficient service, and that not one penny of the public revenues is used to promote private or politionl interests. 1 shall seek the nomination on 'he time honored principle of the county tmit system of selection, for 1 believe tb*s fundamental guarantee, intended for the equal protection of the rights of every community in the state and ■written Into the constitution by our forefathers, should be Inviolably pro served In the spirit aa well as In the letter. Later on, I will prepare a statement dealing with all questions of public In terest. Meanwhile, I declare my can didacy for the office of gwvcmor for the term beginning in June, 1913, promising, if elected, to devote my best efforts and concentrate my undi vided energies to the end that the state may be faithfully served. JOHN M. SLATON. COL. WEST NAMES SLATON Valdosta, Oeorgia. Stating that lie will not be in the race for governor and advocating the candida cy of Hon. John M. Slaton for that of fice, Col. W. S. West of Valdosta has issued the following card: "To thank many of my political friends who have solicited me to en- j ter the race for governor in the com ing primary to succeed lion. Joseph M. ltrown, tne Incumbent, and to con vey to the press of the state my ap preciation for the favorable mention of my name as a candidate for gover nor, is the object of this communica tion. In making up my mind not to en ter the race at this time for Rovor nor, 1 am sending up no wall from south Georgia, for my contention has always been, and I trust will ever be. against sectionalism, and it Is only When the southern part of the state shall advocate the claims of a candi date for governor who Is In every r»- spect as well equipped—as conserva tive, ns honest in purpose, as broad minded, efficient and fair —that I shall espouse Ills cuuse. ‘'■Fulfilling all theso requirement*, then, 1 say, south Georgia, nearing the century murk since she has enjoyed the distinction and, too, upon the eve of the realization of the marvelous possibilities in the material growth and development of this section. Is once more entitled to the honor. "1 appreciate tho confidence of the people of Low udes county and the dix'll senatorial district for the long senatorial service in tire two branches of tlie legislature, and the people of Georgia for my election as president of the state senate. 1 gave the same attention to the discharge of the du ties in personal affairs in private life, for l have ever regarded duty as one of the greatest virtues, whether In the private walks of life or struggling with the difficult problems arising for solution in the political areua, and while 1 would like to be governor, knowing tho trials that lie in the path of him who seeks tlie honor ami tho uncertainty attending the result, I have decided not to enter the con test. 'Tt is well known that Hon. John M. Slaton will bo in live race for gover nor in addition to serving some years in the house with him, he was speak- , or of the house of representatives while 1 was president of the senate in the years 1905-6. It was during tliis term of the legislature that eight new counties were created, and his treatment of south Georgia in appoint- lng the committee on new counties was fair and impartial, and this is evi denced hv the fact that seven of these eight new counties aro in south Geor- - gla. “As n member of the house, as sp< aker of the house of represent* lives, as president of the state sen ate. and —when there was an inter- i regnum In the office of chief execu tive of the state caused by the elec tion of Governor Smith to the T’nlted States senate-—as acting governor, he has always acquitted himself in such a manner as to command the respect and merit the approval es the public. ' With his past record. It is reason able to suppose, if he is elevated by the electorate of Georgia to the of fice of chief executive, his admlnis tration of the state's affair* will bs such as to hold the confidence of bis friends.
