Editor and Owner. 5* a ' k ' ear » * n Advance. »i Ix-gal advertiHemont* niuftt invariably be paid in advance, at the legal rate, and a» the law direct*; and mod be in hand not later than Wednesday morning of the first week of inaertion Mount Vernon, Ga.. Thursday Morning, Oct. 31, 1912. A strong pull all together next Tuesday will put Wilson in. . After electing Wilson and Marshall, the next lx*st thing we can do will be to sow a big crop of oats. Do not let anything keep you away from the polls next Tues day. Put in a solid vote for Wil son and tariff revision. Here’s hoping that the Greeks will knock the stuffing out of Turkey, and that Woodrow Wil son will wallop the wool socks off Teddy and Taft. You might feel lonesome after next Tuesday if you did not help j your neighbors to put up a land slide for Wilson and the princi ples of pure and honest govern ment. Plant more pecans and less cotton. If you can make a living planting cotton you may secure a competency for old age by having pecan trees growing to maturity on the same land. Hanks county has not only a flourishing boys’ corn club but a "Girls’ Home Life Club” besides. It is safe to predict that the boys ; will not be forced to go outside ! of their own county lines to find smart and lovely wives. The time for argument is over. If you are a Domocrat you will vote for Wilson and Marshall on Tuesday next. If you are a scal awag you will vote as you have before, against your own inter ests and against your own people. There is no such thing as pleas ing all the people all the time. Down in Crisp county a farmer named Rogers made potatoes so large that Cordele people refused to Duy them on account of the extra labor required to cut them down to baking size. There is no good reason why boys’ live stock clubs should not 1 boost stock-raising in Georgia * just as they are making a revo- 1 lution in farming. We would be : exceedingly proud for the boys * of this county to be the first to ' organize a fine stock club. . I i The possibilities of this country are wonderful. A member of i the Montgomery county boys’ i corn club may yet be president of ( < these United States. Abraham 1 Lincoln, who was a hoosier rail splitter, had no such opportuni- j ties as the boys of this day and ( time. Cities have their troubles and perplexities as well as the small towns. The people of Savannah ain’t sleep these mornings lx- 1 cause of the persistent crowing ; of roosters, and the turkey trot is grating on the nerves of the j few morally disposed people of Atlanta. Those California and Oregon ; tales about the fortunes made out there in fruits off ten-acre patches make interesting read ing; but the figures given out by enthusiastic.pecan growers show that a few acres in nuts in South Georgia will easily lay those Western anecdotes in the shade, j The most wonderful accom plishment in modern scientific invention is seen in the strides of wireless telcpraph.v. A plant put in operation at Arlington. Va., this week by the government wiil send messages through the j trackless air 3,000 miles. To be able to hold converse with the uttermost parts of the earth is a matter of a very short time. i TrrmrrYfYYYrmfYmm* £ Gleanings From ◄ \ Wisdom’s Field. J SaAAAXAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAXA t Darien Gazette:- We are still anxious to know what good is accomplished by a strike. Oh, yes, we see the harm that’s in ’em, but we want some one to get right up close to us and tell us what good there is in the aver age strike. Savannah News: The Walker county boy who raised 720 bushels of corn on five acres gave an illustration of the profits in corn growing. His I corn cost him 13 1-2 cents per bushels and is worth about $1.25 per bushel on the inland market, or about $1.05 at wholesale at the jiorts. That would give him over S7OO profit, which is worth at tention. Indianapolis Journal; —"The codfish,” said the professor “lays considerably more than a million eggs.” "It is mighty lucky for the codfish that she doesn’t have to cackle over every egg,” said the student who came from the farm Macon Telegraph:—Georgians | have so long been taught to spend 1 their money at home that it is now difficult to induce them to send a dollar to New York cam paign headquarters. Savannah Press: —We would like to know what Statesboro and other towns down that way in tend to do to offset the fame Dub lin got out of her earthquake. Americus Times-Reeorder: — Judge Fite, it is said, may de cline to pay his fine, go to jail, and "pose as a martyr.” It will be all posing, though. The ma jority of Georgians are inclined to regard him as more of a nui sance than anything else. Lyons Progress:—Superinten dent Hendricks, in charge of the Corn Club boys, was here Tues day and he was loud in his praises of the small club in Toombs. This club will be larger during 1913 and we are satisfied that Toombs county will take one of the first premiums. The club took third prize at the Dublin fair and we consider this quite an honor. Pembroke Enterprise:—Because he called him a rascal an Atlanta man is sueing another for 2,000 dollars. At these rates it pays to be a rascal in Atlanta. Haw kins vi 1 le Dispatch News: Hereafter the bolter is going to find himself deprived of the right to vote in the Democratic primar ies. This is a good rule and ought to be strictly enforced. Douglas Enterprise:-The En terprise urges the farmers to give at least two days off during the next few weeks. One to go to the polls and vote for Wilson, and the other for your attendance at the Coffee County Fair. It is busy times for you, but these matters are of much interest to you. Monroe Advertiser:—The knock er isn’t in himself bad. It’s only when he has no remedy for the condition that he knocks that he’s a mere destruction ist. A knocker sometimes is a good thing. Dublin Courier-Dispatch:—The schools of this county must be improved if children and county are to keep step with progress. The time has come when any sort of a school will not do, un less an injustice is done the chil- I dren and the county.
