A SOUND WIND IN j
A SOUND BODY
Exercise is Necessary to En
joy the Happiest and
Most Useful Life.
Extracts from a speech by
.John Morris, principal of Uvalda
school, Uvalda, Ga., at the meet
ing of .the teachers of Montgom
ery county:
Be it known to all who teach,
that a sound mind in a sound
body is the best motto to instill
in the minds of the hoys and
girls of Montgomery. It is my
privilege tu explain the nere.- itv
and mode of producing the sound
body in which the sound mind is
to dwell. It is a fundamental law
of our being that exercise is
necessary in order to enjoy the
happiest, longest and most use
ful life.
Puppies, kittens, pigs, lambs,
calves, colts in fact, all animals
appear to be so constituted as to’
require exercise. As is well
known, the animals get their
needed exercise by yielding to
their instinctive desire for play.
It is too often the case that
children are hindered from tak
ing the right amount and kind of!
exercise. It is the duty of the
teacher to see. as far as possible,
that children consigned to their
care shall have healthful exor
cise.
Exercise will stimulate diges
tion is the universal opinion of
the medical piofession. The food
taken into the bod\ will be di
gested with less work by the or
gans and the food value of the
meal will be more entirely used
in heating, constructing and re
pairing the body.
It requires little argument to
convince the reasonable that ev
ery pupil whose body is in a
healthy condition will be more
happy and contented than the
one whose body is weak and
sickly. It is the solemn, primary
duty of the teacher to exert the
greatest effort to see that the
child is in in a happy mood for
that is one of the main conditions
in order to make the best schol
astic progress. If a child has
happiness in its youth it will be.
Mr. Grady Durden, of Jesup,

inclined to follow the paths of
happiness when it is older.
These consequences naturally
follow the foregoing effects of
exercise: 1. The mind is more
callable of use; it can be con
trolled; it can be concentrated; it
it will understand facts better;
the judgment will be better; the
r asoning power will he truer;
the memory will he more capa
cious; the imagination more pro
lific; the willpower, as a result,
will be increased and the charac
ter will he improved. Besides
'having a letter character, the
pupil will he enabled to have in
use all of his mental as well as
his physical power. Efficiency
jis the magic word that achieves
success. It is the duty of the
teacher to assist the child in ac
quiring physical as well as psy
chical efficiency.
A peculiar opinion is common
that girls should'not he included
in the physical exercises of our
contest on the ISth inst. at this
place. I appeal to the patrons of
Montgomery county to cite me to
one reason why girls should not
nave strong and healthy bodies
as are possible. The weak, pale,
nervous, thin-blooded, chalked
and perfumed girl is not half as
happy as the girls who are heal
thy, vigorous, active, vim-blood
ed. crimson-cheeked and unpaint
ed. The former girls will have
better tempers, firmer wills, bet
ter minds and better bodies than
the latter, not mentioning the
greater attractiveness of the
iris who exorcise their bodies
with the forenamed effects.
Besides the good effects of ex
ercise already mentioned, the
healthy body and efficient mind
winch exercise will aid in produc
ing.. the csthetieal effects are im
portant.
Only those who are well in
mind and body can truly enjoy
the son s of birds that freight
t'-e air with melody: the music of
r be.bbling brook; the beauteous
t nlliancv of the twinkling stars;
the greatness of the surging sea,
■ .uving with majestic grandeur:
iho awesome sublimity of the
mighty mountains. The soul is
• that can digest the ambrosia
and nectar which the sights,
sounds and noble deeds furnish.
1 implore you in the name of
tiie children who need your help,
to remember: “Exercise pro
d ■ cos health; health is the first;
wealth.” I
