But to merchantmen, to the smaller and older warships—to everything that floats, except the very highest and more recent products of the ship builder’s art the mine presents the danger of complete and almost instant annihilation. The rigidity of the ship is in itself an element of j danger, for the water surround in •it is incompressible. If the son and frame could give way without rupture, and permit the enormously expanding gases i 2,000 times the volume of the .olid explosive) to transmit their energy in such away as simply pus the ship aside, and thus x id away to the surface, the | . rna ■< mi. at he slight. But j this cannot be. And the expan sion is so nearly instantaneous 1 that pushing the ship aside is physically impossible. Therefore I i the structure must break, re-' ; leasing the gases first into, the : interior, and then by lines of , least resistance finally up into the air This action is complete ly instantaneous. It blows off hatch covers and deck plates, t l ists massive steel members in to unrecognizable shapes, spreads I It transmutes la pro id ship in a sinking mass of wreckage n happy passenger ...loon into a shambles —carries a)-■.nilrig into a hundred homes. Such is the effect of mines.— Iney Gra K»n in Leslie’s. SEED OATS FOR SALE. ! nave for sale 800 bushels of Rust-Proof Seed Oats. Will be offered at market prices. Shipping point, Uvalda. Write.
