BEEF CATTLE
PROSPECTS IN GEORGIA
M. P. Jarnagin, Professor of Animal
Husbandry, Georgia State Col
lege Os Agriculture
! Feeding rattle -for beef during the
past two yearn ban been fraught with
because of unusual condi
tions caused by the war, high cost of
feed stuffs and tho foot and mouth
disease
During the year 3014 the price of
feeders was higher than during the
fall of 1915. The tea on» a.-signed
are (hat there are not so many buy
er In the field he< an e of the price
of foodstuff. Here in Georgia and
northern Florida there were many
western buyers during the fall of
1914, taking up thousands of cattle,
hut during the fall of 1915 they did
not show up. Ah a consequence local
rutile are bringing l> : .
True, cotton: cod meal is up, hut
close figuring will reveal that the sav
ing in the buying price of the animal
Is greater, at least that the time this
is written, than tin- inere.i.ed cost of
meal will amount to in a feeding pe
riod of 90 to 100 days.
The fad that there are fewer cat
tle being fed for the market would
Indicate good prices ai marketing
time. In view of these considerations
it would appear that till will he a
good year to feed cattle for beef IrG
Georgia, providing the bonier has
Vmur home grown tied and a silage.

Potash Prospects
W. A. Worsham, Professor Os Agri
cultural Chemistry, Georgia State
College Os Agriculture
Many inquiries are being made as
to the prospects of obtaining potash,
In view of tiie absence of the u mil
supply from Germany. The indlea
cations ate that the fertilizer dealers I
sire going to put on (lie market, for
the most part, a hftv grade potash.
Government investigations of alunlte
in Utah has developed that It is a
■jirnetlral source of potash, and some
of the fertilizer dealers are already
making in < of It.
Not much progress, has been made
in obtaining potash econuinieiilly from
feldspar for ferlll er purposes, nor
lms there been very inneh obtain
ed from kelp of the western const.
From all these sources not enough
potash will tie obtained to equal the
normal demand made upon Oermuny'
and nothing at present indicates that
when the war ceases till country will
not again rely upon the German mines.
As n substitute for potash, the
farmer of Georgia will find that cotton
seed meal, If obtained al reasonable
price, may he associated with add
phosphate and give good results.
About T'i per cent of the cottonseed
meal Is potash. Considering that many
Georgia soils are not deficient In pot
ash, this combination may give as
much satisfaction, gene -ally speak- j
lug, as could probably be hoped for
at ibis time.
Savings Incident To Proper
Storing Os Farm Machinery
L. C. Hart, Professor Os Farm Mechan
ics, Georgia State College
Os Agriculture
Before tin* winter sets In tho tuu
chlnery of the farm should la* un
der shelter and at the first opportun
ity the farmer should obtain some
thick black train oil costing from 12
to 15 cents per gallon, and apply this
;to all polished surfaces of the ma
rhlnery. This can be done with a
iiuop stick.
It is a known fact that the draft
of a rusty plow is twenty live per
cent greater than one that has been
kept free from rust with proper oil
ing. The ditt, of emu e, adheres to
the rusted parts instead of shedding
with less friction over a smooth ami
ehining surface.
('are should be taken to exclude
dust from the hearings of all kinds
of machinery. This can he t he done
by getting the oil there first. A lib
eral application of oil should, there
fore, he made to all hearings If. In
Iho spring, when (lie machinery Is
Sakk-n out for usi , it Is found that the
hearings are Rummy, apply an oil that
Ss half kerosene and half machine oil
for the first half hour of operation
and then apply the regular machine
oil.
Butting the machinery of the farm
in shape now and Keeping it In shape,
■will he a great saving next spring,
vhen the farmer is busiest, and when
the troubles incident to rust and
poorly Kept machinery will low up
■worst.
"Cottonseed meat stimulates the
appetite, thereby inducing tepid gains
and a quick finish as welt as a: <lst
ing in maintaining the appetite when
-the animals are in high condition. It
Is also true when the prices of feeds
and cattle are high that more efficient
rations show a greater ooinni- tTial ad
vantage than when prices are low."
For complete eradication of the wild
onion, both fall and spring plowing
is necessary and November is lb*
best time to do the f- work.
