COMMON SENSE • OUGHT TO CONTROL Cotton Acreage Should Be Curtailed for Farmer’s Own Safety. There is a danger that, stimu lated by the present price of cot ton, there will be a large expan sion in acreage for the coming year. The crop of 1916 ought to be no larger than the crop of 1915. The reduction in acreage was vol untary. It was reached by no national agreement and no act of congress, but by the cotton plant ers themselves, because, primari ly, of their failure to market the big crop of the year before at profitable prices. So extensive is the acreage of cotton that it is difficult to get anything like a common agree ment as to acreage, binding upon every planter from Virginia to Oklahoma; but there is a common sense among farmers that ought to control the action of the in dividual. Then there should be a community interest expressed in the reduction of acreage with a broadening influence through the county and State. One or two years of ten or eleven million bales of cotton, supplemented by other crops on the abandoned cotton fields, would relieve the Southern plan ter of his most serious difficul ties, would enable him to culti vate, in accordance with his own ideas of the value of his own farm, and not in accordance with the views of others who are ad vising him what to do. This year the crop is less than eleven millions. The American mills are taking more than ever. England is using cotton for pur poses of commerce and for pur poses of war. Germany is smug gling cotton into her blockaded ports wherever it is possible. The result is steady prices for the new crop and f..r the surplus of the old crop, which has been hanging over the market. If the Southern planter will repeat in 1916 the policy of cur tailment adopted in 1915, he will enrich the South. Let him not be tempted by the high price. It is the price that the world is willing to pay for an eleven mil lion bale crop. It is not the price the world would pay for a fifteen million bale crop. —Home and Farm. Large Wild Cat Killed in Houston. A 35 pound catamount, the product of Houston county, was brought here Wednesday night, and was for some time the ad miration of all who saw it. The beast, some four feet long, was strapped across the wind shield of a car, having been brought here by Mr. D. C. Wal lace to be sold. The animal was caught between Perry and Tivola after a five hour chase by two dogs belong ing to W. A. Smith. Wallace and Smith arrived in time to save the dogs and killed the beast with sticks, although the hounds were pretty badly cut up. The cat had been giving con siderable trouble in that section of the country by killing pigs and other small animals. Breaks in the hind legs of the animal told the story of a previous capture and escape. Macon News. Three Farm Associations To Meet in Athens. Athens, Ga., Jan. 7. —Three organizations of Georgia farmers are to hold their annual sessions at the State College of Agricul ture, January 17, 18, 19. These are the Georgia Breeders’ Associ ation, the Georgia Dairy and Live Stock Association and the Georgia State Horticultural Soci ety. Special railrord rates are to be in effect for the meetings. The county agents and short-course students now at the college will attend, and the indications are that there will be a larger num ber of farmers than usual from various parts of the state.
