NEW PRESIDENT OF LUCY COBB Miss Mildred Rutherford is Again Head of Noted School. The trustees of Lucy Cobb In stitute recenly elected Miss Mildred Rutherford, of thiS city, president of the famous old col lege for young women here. Miss Rutherford has assumed responsibility for the institution personally by contract, the pres ent co-principals declining to re new their contract with the trus tees. She will take charge of the in stitution as president at the open ing of the next fall term—in Sep tember. Misses Gerdine and Brumby, who have been associate princi pals for the past several years, will be principals of their respec tive departments—Miss Brumby of the French department and Miss Gerdine of the department of history—and they will con tinue in the future to give their best endeavors to the success of the institution and to the cause of the best in higher education for the young women of Georgia. With Miss Rutherford, Miss Brumby, and Miss Gerdine the Institute will grow in vitality, ex pand in usefulness and increase in enrollment and in service to the young womanhood of Georgia and the South. Miss Rutherford, and her sis ter, Mrs. M.- A. Lipscomb, were principals of the Institute for more than twenty-five years— until the present administration assumed charge several years ago. There are hundreds of alumnae in Georgia and in every State of the South—indeed, scattered ov er the entire Union —who obtain ed their educational equipment for life under the tutelage of Miss Rutherford and Mrs. Lipscomb, To them will today go the news that “Miss Miilie” is again to be president of the school and the announcement will be of the greatest interest. At the approaching commence ment season many plans for the coming year for Lucy Cobb will be announced. One of the fea tures of the commencement will be a great alumnae reunion at which it is confidently expected that fully 500 former students of the girls’ college will be present. Concerning Montgomery County People. The following local mention of Montgomery county people is ta ken from the last issue of the Vidalia Advance: Messrs. Harry Geiger and Otis Rackley, of Mt. Vernon, were visitors in the city one afternoon this w’eek. Mr. T. H. Johnson, Jr., of Uvalda was in the city Tuesday. Misses Inez and Mattie Mc- Bride, of Mt. Vernon, were in the city shopping Thursday. Mrs. M. B. Peterson and daughter, of near Sharpe Spur, were in the city shopping last Tuesday. Col. A. B. Hutcheson, of Mt. Vernon, was in the city Tuesday on business. Mr. Willie McQueen, of Mt. Vernon, was a visitor in the city Wednesday. Miss Esther Geiger, of Mt. Vernon, spent the week end w'ith Misses Mattele and Urma Lewis. Commits Suicide to Escape Troubles. Augusta, April 14. - Financial troubles which would have caused his arrest if he had returned home caused Edgar Owens, a prominent Abbeville, S. C., man, to commit suicide at a hotel here today. He took carbolic acid and died soon after medical aid reached him. Administrator’s Sale.
