SELLING COTTON
CALIFORNIA PLAN
President American Cotton
Growers’ Exchange Gives
Information.
Carl Williams, of Oklahoma
City, President of the American
Cotton Growers’ Exchange, rep
resenting the giant cotton Tco-op
erative marketing units operating
this year in the' western cotton
belt, and Chairman of.the Board
of Directors of the* Oklahoma
Cotton Growers’ Association,
whose thirty-fiye thousand mem
bers are this year selling their
cotton on the California plan, let
fall some interesting information
in Atlanta Wednesday as to the
kind of men who control such
great marketing enterprizes,
once they are formed and ready
for operation.
Mr. Williams, together with
other officials of the American
Cotton'.Growers’ Exchange, has
been’in*Atlanta for the past few
days, conferring with leaders of
the Georgia Cotton Growers Co
operative Association, which is
about to launch a new member
ship'drive in this fstate, in the
course of which it will receive
substantial! assistance from the
national.leaders of .the California
plan co-operative marketing
movement for cotton. And he
had occasion to discuss the direc
torate of the Oklahoma Associa
tion, in reference to some of the
problems of the. Georgia Organi
zation Committee.
One'of the members of'the
Georgia 'organization ’committee
was discussing the difficulty of
getting certain-farmers and busi
ness men to understand the fact
that the grodp which'.organizes a
co-operative marketing associa
tion on the pure California plan
cannot possibly dominate the af
fairs of the association once its
organization is complete; and
, that’its control falls completely
into the hands of elected repre-
the member farm
ers, in the selection of whom ev
ery member has one vote.
“The point you are seeking to
make clear," said Mr. Williams,
“is certainly plain enough on the
face of the membership contract
itself. But, lam wondering if
the experience of the Oklahoma
Cotton Growers’ Association
would not prove it once.’and for
all.
“In Oklahoma, we have a
Board of eleven directors, repre
senting ten'districts of equal
membership in the]'state, with
one public director appointed by
the state government to repre
sent the public. The Association
was organized by an organization
committee of seventeen promin
ent men. Os the seventeen, only
two are on the'present Board of
Directors, elected by the growers.
“Not one of the .'directors holds
a political office, and all are cot
ton producers whose principal
businesses farming. The other
Board took some aver
ages about itself. Its average
weight is 176 pounds, its average
age is 49 years, it members have
lived In Oklahoma for an average
of 26 years and 3 months, they
farm an average of 707 acres of
land apiece and 183 acres of cot
ton, and they average a fraction
more than four children to the
man.

Some Interesting Figures
On Watermelon'Crop.
The Georgia Bureau of Markets
gives some]interestisg figures in
regard to the' watermelon crop.
Texas is shown to have! devoted
38,000 acres to melon culture and
Georgia’.came second with 30,000
acres.
It required 44,000 cars to trans
port the]melons to their.-.destina
tions. The highest price a car
was $1,150] and the average
worth of a car was SSOO.
“If we consider that watermel
ons belong somewhat to the lux
ury class of goods produced from
the ground, the widening demand
for them would indicate that the
buying power on the part of the
public during the summer was
not in such dreadful shape after
all", declared Lem B. Jackson,
director of the State Market Bu
reau. “Os course with the small
boy and the colored brethren,
watermelons do not represent a
luxury. They are the sheerest
sort of necessities.”
