I USE THE NEW BRIDGE!
How Test of Cream
Saves Farmer Money.
The Babcock test is a method
for ascertaining the amount of
fat in milk and milk products.
It was devised by S. M. Babcock,
Ph. D., Chief Chemist of the
Wisconsin Agricultural Experi
ment Station and first made pub
lic in 1890. It is rapid, inex
pensive and accurate and has
found extensive application.
Among the important results
coming from its use are: the pay
ment for milk and cream accord
ing to fat content has been made
practicable: it has enabled milk
producers to detect unprofitable
cows and guided them in improv
ing their herds.
The test is based on the action
of sulphuric acid upon the con- 1
stituents of milk serum, and the
action of centrifugal force The
acid acts upon the milk-serum
solids (casein, sugar, albumin
and salts) in such away as to
break them down and liberate
the fat globules from the form of
an emulsion. These globules
easily run together due to the
heat developed. The separation
of the fat is then completed by
centrifugal! force. The bottles
containing the mixture of milk !
and acid are whirled in the Bab- 1
cock tester at a high rate of speed \
and the light fat separates and
appears at the top as a column in
the graduated neck of the test
bottle where the percentage is
read directly.
For illustration, Jersey No. 1
gives 4 gallons or 34.4 pounds of !
milk per day that tests 6 percent
fat, while Jersey No. 2, giving
the same amount of milk tests
only 4 per cent fat. The total
fat from Jersey No. 1 is 2.06
pounds per day and that from
Jersey No. 2. is 1.37 pounds,
proving that Jersey. No. 1 is the
more valuable cow, other things
being equal.

Georgia Doctors to
Have Home Coming.
l| Columbus, Ga. f Mar. 13.—Co
lumbus doctors, assisted by the
Chamber of Commerce and all |
other civic orgaizations, are mak- j
ing extensive preparations for
entertaining the Home-Coming
Meeting of the Medical Associa
tion of Georgia in Columbus,
3rd, 4th and sth. The Empire
State of the south has furnished
i the world many of its most noted
doctors. Ether anaesthesia, that
great boon to humanity, was dis
covered by a Georgia country
doctor—Crawford W. Long.
Many other notable contributions
to the medical sciences have been
furnished by Georgians of the
past and present. The medical
1 colleges at Atlanta and Augusta,
two of the oldest institutions in
; the United States, have graduat
ed many practioners both of the
surrounding states and other
parts of the country. All former
Georgia doctors now practicing
in other states have been invited
to this great Home-Coming Meet
ing. Columbus expects one of
the largest crowds in her history.
Special features of the program
will be the banquet in honor of
; all former presidents, the enter
j tainment for ladies and a trip to
I Camp Benning. Important sub
jects on the scientific program
will be discussions on the effects
of the present methods of living
on future generations, gland de
j ficienies and gland feed and the
prevention of infant mortality.
More than 200,000 babies die an
nually in the United States. The
majority of these are preventa
ble. Georgia must do her share
to prevent this appalling loss.
Dr. J. M. Anderson, president
of the local society, is being ably
assisted by all other members of
the profession. Dr. E. C. Thrash
of Atlanta, president of the asso
ciation will preside at the meet
ings.
ANTIMONY HELPS LEPERS.
It is reported by a British inves
tigator, Mr. F. G. Cawston, who has
been studying leprosy at Durban,
that the administration of colloidal
antimony appears to produce good
effects. According to the British
Medical Journal he found that
lepers in an advanced state of the
disease, with all of their fingers and
toes suppurating, were helped to
such an 'extent by this treatment
that the suppuration entirely ceased.
