Deputy Connected With Distillery Asked to Resign. Aiken, S. C., April 22. —Sheriff Howard this morning demaned the resignation of Deputy Sheriff Thomas M. Butler, of North Augusta, on the strength of what he said was positive evidence of that officer being in league with the operating of the big moon shine still captured Friday at Bo gard’s Hill, over the Edgefield line, near Aiken county. State Officer E. L. Scott, ap pointed by Governor Cooper and several prohibition officers in Augusta are also said to be in volved in the hush money scan dal. This information comes di rect from Sheriff Howard, who, however, at this time refuses to give the source of his information, stating it was.not Lowther, the moonshiner arrested, who squeal ed. A big wholesale moonshine making plant was seized Friday afternoon just over the Edgefield line, out of Aiken county. The raid was made by Sheriff How ard, of Aiken, who called State Constable Ed Andrews to cross the county line with him, thus legalizing the raid. Six men were at work around the still on the swamp branch, when the officers arrived. All, however, dashed to safety, but the leader, John Lowther, a white man, who was arrested and turned over to Prohibition Officer A. W. McArty for the Edgefield authorities. Twelve large vats holding 9,000 gallons of beer, one four-horse power steam boiler, a flake stand, five sacks of sugar, 50 feet of copper worms and thirty gallons of high grade 105 proof corn whiskey were seized, and des troyed. Part of the moonshine plant was hauled to Aiken and Edgefield courthouse as evidence. The party in the raid consisted of Officers Gary Anderson, Mus co Samuels, Walter Sheppard, Ed Andrews, Sheriff Howard and Deputy Robinson. This is the third big still caught near the Bogard Hill section, one be ing seized only Thursday. The still captured Friday had a cap acity, when in full tilt, of a gal lon a minute and has supplied liquor for fifty miles around. Warehouse and Produce Destroyed by Fire. Thomasville, Ga., April 25 The warehouse of Mcßae Broth ers, in Boston, occupied by H. M. Groover, was des- j troyed by fire this week and all of its contents lost. By the fire Mr. Groover lost several hun dred bushels of corn, several thousand bushels of potatoes, a good supply of syrup, peanuts, j hay 2nd two thousand potato! crates. The stock was valued at $4,000 with $2,500 insurance and a loss of SI,OOO on improvements recently put upon the building.
