U. S. WEATHER FORECAST
For the Week Beginning May
12—Issued by U. S. Weath
er Bureau.
For the South Atlantic and
East Gulf States: .
There-will be rain Wednesday
in the south Atlantic States hut
otherwise fair weather will pre
vail during the week. Tempera
tures will rise Thursday and will
be about normal thereafter.
Cairo and all Grady county had
heavy rains since our last issue.
Perhaps the hardest rain of the
year was last Friday night, and
for the length of time it rained
the one on Tuesday, was perhaps,
harder. . Now' that it has cleared
off, watch the crops grow.
It was a move in the right di
rection when the Live Stock As
sociation was organized last Tues
day. Every farmer in Grady
county should be an active mem
ber.
It is said that both the water
melon and cantaloupes will be la
ter than usual in this section this
summer and that it will be the
livtcer part of June before the
crops begin to move. The melon
crop in Grady is not as large as
in former years. ’
The leading question now is
“what will Uncle Sam dc in re
gard to the war?” the sinking of
the big liner, Lusitaania, by a
German submarine, which killed
hundreas of Americans, calls for
some drastic action. We are per
fectly willinc to lenvo the ans
wer to President Wilson.
The queerest political plnnlc ev
er incorporated into a platform
in Georgia is that of 0. 15. Scott
and L. D. Gonge, who are run
ning for city council of Rain-
bridge. It calls for the public
distribution at the expense of the
city of two pounds of fresh mi a
daily to every fanvly in Bair-
bridge. This should prove to be
a vote catcher.
At a recent meeting of the of
ficials of the Thomas County Fair
Association it was decided to
change the name to the south
west, G-orgia Association and in
stead of just holding .a fair for
Thomas county it will include all
the counties In tnis section. The
time for holding the fair was fix
ed for Oct. 12. This is a good
move and we hope Grady will
have a prize winning exhibit at
this fair.
.Perhaps there has heen no hor
ror of war that has ever shocked
the world to such an extent as
the sinking of the Lusitania. It’s
effects are so far reaching that it
may involve several of the na
tions now neutral, even including
our own. The Progress presents
this week a special story of this
latest sea tragedy which gives a
gfapie account of the very latest
tints learned from the scope of
disaster.
