We are not conscious of truth un
til wo understand it in the absolute,
We get understanding in the abso
lute only through principle demon
strated.
A eliild can be taught to say two
and t wo are four, and when asked
the sum of two and two lie will say
four, but he docs not understand
that it is tlie truth, lie only be
lieves. Although his belief lie cor
rect unless he utilizes it in reaching
understanding, t his belief is of no
avail. When the chilli is taught
that two apples and two apples
make four apples lie can prove that
two and two are four, and is con-
cious tlmt it is the truth. He un
derstands in the absolute and in the
degree tlint lie understands in the
absolute in that degree does lie
manifest mind.
Does this not prophecy that all
eternal verities must of necessity
conic to us through principle dem
ons! rated?
He who founded masonry said of
understanding, that the "merchan
dise of it is better than the mer
chandise of silver, and the gain
thereof than fine gold. -She is more
precious than rubies; and rill things
that thou ean,st desire arc not to be
compared unto her.”
Understanding being based on
principle, principle must be demon
strated to obtain it; therefore there
is no intelligence outside of under
standing in the absolute, outside of
her all is opinions, belief, specula
tion and these have no principle to
declare the truth of their claims.
When wo nrrive at understanding
in the nbsolutc, we have found
science which cannot be mistaken,
cannot lie, deceive, lie twisted nor
Stretched. Understanding in the
absolute is the substance of tilings
that faith hopes for. It is the line
of demarkation between intelligence
and ignorance, between reality and
unreality, between the spiritual and
material, between truth and the lie.
A child might lie taught mathe
matics unt il lie is 1 lirce score and
ten, if he never demonstrated its
principle ho would never under
stand it, and therefore would.never
be eoncious of the truth of it. We
arrive at understanding in the ab
solute through principle demon
strated. We become eoncious of
mind through understanding. Di
vine Principle demonstrated is di
vine mind, and is “the mind that
Wos’also in Christ Jesus.” This is
the .same idea apprehended by the
ripostle when he said, “henceforth
know we no man after the flesh,”
for mind is not in the flesh, but is
in understanding. When Jesus
made the assertion that “the flesh
profitelh nothing;” he verified this
statement.
Principle was here long before
human history appeared. Wc can
not own any part of principle: if
so, it would eventually be exhusted.
Our possessions consist of our un
derstanding of, and capacity to
demonstrate it, and this under
standing and capacity is mind man
ifested through our earthly person
ality.
(Principle has no beginning nor
ending. It occupies all space; is
eternal and infinite. On principle
all cteral verities are based and in
it they abide. Therefore, principle
must of necessity be divine. Prin
ciple is that which has a rule of ac
tion through whieli wc get the un
derstanding of that we seek, that
which has no principle to declare
the truth of it, is unknowable arid
is nothing, no-thing. Wc have be
liefs and opinions galore, but unless
we progress into understanding in
the absolute, wp are void of intelli
gence. We can express intelligence
only in that degree (lint we under
stand in the absolute.
Solomon said, “that all men are
born equal.” By this he meant
that all men were equnl in under
standing, your undrstuding that
two and two arc four, all
the saqie as mine and in tl i
oneness of understanding we arc
equal whether we bcavhite, black or
green, therefore in the mount of
understanding, wc meet anil stand

CACTUS CAUTION
Propaganda For Spineless Cac
tus Should 6* Viewed With
Suspicion By Southern Farm
ers Experiments Ab A For
age Crop Not Conclusive
Washington, D. G., April 25, 10.
The propaganda carried on in por
tions of tlie South in advocacy of
the commercial planting of .Spino-
less IVickly Pear, or Spineless Cac
tus, (should lie viewed with suspic
ion by farmers who are seeking
thoroughly proved forage crops for
that region. For any portion of
tlie South this is no more than an
experimental crop, according to
specialists of tlie . U. S. Depart
ment of Agriculture. The! Experi
ment Station at Gainesville, Flori
da, some years ago tested out thirty
or more varieties furnished by this
Department and found them entire
ly unsuited to tlie conditions there.
While tlie reports from some of the
coastal sections are, more favorable,
tile plants have not been grown on
a sufficient seale to warrant more
than an experimental planting by
the men of limited means. Pros•
pcctivo growers should confine
themselves to a small number of
plants, from which a nursery can
soou be established if tlie crop
proves to lie adapted. 11 should lie
borne in mind that this crop is to lie
considered a succulent to be fed in
connection with ivconcentrate ration
und preferably a little dry hay. It
contains 88 to 91 per cent wat el
and no stock can be maintained on
it alone. It is necessary U> decide
whether, in a region where green
feed of more nutritious f6rnge crops
can be had nearly, if not quite, the
entire year, there is a place for such
a crop.-
Stocks for planting are widely dis
tributed in small quantities in the
South, unit there are a number of
growers in Florida who arc ;otiering
cuttings for sale at reasonable pric
es, so there is no need of paying
fancy figures. There also are many
such growers in California.
Activities .of promoters during
the past season have not. been con
fined to the South. They have
operated and actually sold, carloads
of cuttings as far north as Colorado,
of varieties that are known to be
too tender to stand the tempera
tures of San Antonio,' Texas.
There is but one \ spineless species
known whieli will withstand the
temperatures in Texas as far north as
Waco, This is Opuntia Ellissiivnu,
a medium sized species of about the
same habit ns the common natives
of southern Texas. This hardy
Species' seems to have its origin at.
Corpus Christi and there are evi
dence,s that it was grown there four
teen years ago. It is known to be
grown there still. The stock of it
is quite limited, there being but
few growers known to the Depart
ment who have propagated it on
any scale, and even there supplies
arc not large.
So' far us the types which are
now being exploited are concerned,
they cannot be grown except in the
Very warmest sections of t he coun
try. It is yet. to lie determined
whether any spineless cactus can
make an economic crop in the hum
id South where legumes and other
forages of a higher nutritive value
can be hail in a green, suceulent
condition nearly the entire year.
Low temperatures limit the possible
cultivation of these exploited forms
to the const and interior valleys of
California, southwestern Arizona
umder. irrigation,) Texas, south of
the Tcxns-Mexieo Railway, arid,
favored localities on the immediate
G ulf Coast, The experiments men
tioned above appear to exclude the
crop from central Florida. Furth
er data are necessary to determine
its value on the coast.
