WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 31, 2018 Sports WWW.COASTALCOURIER.COM PAGE 12 Shrimp season closes off state The Georgia Department of Natu ral Resources announced last week that shrimping off the coast of Georgia has been closed. “No person may trawl for brown, pink or white shrimp in federal waters off Georgia,” effective last Wednesday,” a DNR release said. State waters were closed the week be fore because of low water temperatures in the area for a prolonged period, DNR said. The closures are to protect white shrimp during their spawning season. The DNR said it had requested the clo sure of federal waters to protect the area’s shrimp population. NOAA Fisheries will issue a new Fish ery Bulletin announcing the re-opening to shrimp harvest in federal waters off Georgia. When 2019 rolls around, Statesboro will be able to add professional sports to its list of attrac tions. South Georgia Tormen- ta FC announced last week in a press conference at the Gene Bishop Field House at Paulson Stadium that it will be a founding mem ber of USL Division III — a third-division branch of American professional soccer that will begin play next year. The league will open play with at least eight franchises in the spring of 2019. An extensive tour of potential cities and clubs was conducted by the USL throughout 2017 and the league’s recognition of Tormenta as a mem ber franchise makes the Statesboro club the first ever member of the new league. “About four years ago, my wife, Netra, and I had a crazy idea,” Tormenta president Darin Van Tas- sell said. “We thought, ‘Hey, we’re in the middle of the hotbed of football in the American South. Let’s put a soccer team here. “It may have sounded crazy to a lot of people, but we had found a passion for the game watching our kids play. We found out that plenty of others shared that passion and so we wanted to bring soccer to Statesboro.” A prime factor in Tor- menta’s quick ascension from fledgling club to pio neer for a new profession al league is the attendance and overall support from the surrounding com munity. So, with bigger games on the horizon, the press conference also an nounced that Tormenta will move forward with construction of a 5,382- seat stadium. BY PATTY Leon pleon@coastalcourier.com 912-876-0156, ext. 1025 Former Bradwell Institute and Geor gia State Football player, Ulrick John, says he is committed to enriching the lives of adults and children with disabil ities. The Liberty County native and cur rent tackle for the Green Bay Packers created the Ulrick John Foundation with a mission of “Empowering adults/ children with developmental disabili ties by providing an environment that will allow those individuals to func tion through education, counseling and mentoring to fulfill their dreams and goals.” John will be discussing his founda tion at a meet and greet from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at PS Tavern, 11 W. Bay St., Savannah. The meet and greet is hosted by PS Tavern owners Paisley and Scott Min- shall and ASM Sports Consulting. The public is encouraged to come out to support the cause and meet John. Raffle prizes and other items will be up for auction. In November, the Ulrick John Foun dation and ASM Sports Consulting an ¬ JOHN nounced a part nership and the Vaden Nissan Group in Hines ville. The partner ship is supposed to enable both parties to help the Liberty County area raise aware- -ness for children and adults with developmental disabilities. About Ulrick John John grew up in Hinesville since the age of 3. He started his football career at Bradwell Institute, graduating in 2010. He played college football at Georgia State while earning his degree in exer cise science. He became the first foot ball player from Liberty County to be drafted in the NFL drafter. That was in the seventh round of the 2014 draft by the Indianapolis Colts. May 10 has been proclaimed Ulrick John Day by the city of Hinesville. John was picked up by the Miami Dolphins for one season and played one season with the Arizona Cardinals. In September 2017 he was signed by the Green Bay Packers. The stadium, which will be on Old Register Road on the site of the current Hackers driving range, will feature a fieldhouse with team and front office facil ities. The construction will extend beyond the field as retail space will fill the void between the stadium and the 301 bypass. The venue itself also goes be yond soccer as the build ing plans aim to make it a year-round destination for events. “The one thing we knew we couldn’t do was build a soccer stadium,” Van Tas- sell said. “This is going to be the new home for our team. It’s also going to per mit the city to host con certs and festivals that we haven’t had before.” Since its creation in 2016, Tormenta has com peted in the Premier De velopment League — a division consisting main ly of current collegiate players looking to im press professional clubs for a chance to advance their careers. The club has found success both on and off the field, notching a two-year record of 13-8- 7 while also being named the PDL’s new franchise of the year in 2016 and fin ishing as a runner-up to the league’s overall fran chise of the year last sea son. In opening remarks, USL D3 vice president Ste ven Short mentioned that it was the buzz created around Tormenta — and subsequent high atten dance numbers and win ning ways — that made the franchise an ideal choice to lead into a new league. Also mentioned con stantly has been the envi ronment created between the team’s front office, its players and all of its fans. “We view this as a fam ily,” Van Tassell said. “We want to give our players the best possible experi ence while they’re with us. And when they go back (to college) or move on, my wife has still shown up at games. They know we’re following them and root ing for them.” The admiration is mu tual as current and former Tormenta players made up a solid chunk of Thurs day’s attendance. Some players have taken offsea son jobs running various facets of Tormenta’s front office and youth programs. Others simply felt the ob ligation to make their way to Statesboro for the big day. The team will compete in the upcoming PDL season and will retain its name and colors as it makes the jump to the pro side next season.
