The Henry County Weekly VOL. XXXV McDonough Artists Capture Rockmart. Misses Nolan and Bond and Mrs. Graves Delight Large Audi ence In Concert. The Rockmart. News has the fol lowing to say concerning the coia cert recently given there and the ■sweet singing and playing of Misses Annie Nolan and Ladie V. Bond and of Mrs Grave’s skill as an accompanist: “The concert Friday evening given by the Craig -Gowham band was rightly called Grand Concert. The people of Rockmart have yet io be disappointed in an entertain men 1 , by the band. They not. only furnish the best of music them selves, bnt they secure the best to be bad in other Hnes. “The vocal soloist, for the even ing, Miss Nolun, of McDonough, is a real artist and possesses a sweet, voice of unusual quality. Her sele ction from Faust wa* followed hy an encore while she was called back upon the stage twice when she sang “With My Dear”. Mrs. Graves, also of McDonough, who played her accompaniments, is a highly accomplished pianist and showed that she is perfectly at home with her instrument. No number on the program was more enjoyed than the “Poet and Pea sant” by Misses Nolan and Ludie Y. Bond. The duet was benntifullv rendered, every tone being brought out clearly and sweetly. Miss O’Bryan, of Rome, won much favor by her two selections in dia lect, being encored both times. “The large audience expressed their pleasure and appreciation by loud and long upplaiis*;.” ** The host of McDonough friends of these accomplished favorites here are too well acquainted with their gifts to he surprised at the ovations they received. For dur ing recent years Miss Annie Nolan has charmed our people at concert and at church with her beautiful voice, and Miss Ludie V. Bond and Mrs. Grrves have also played their way into our hearts with their de lightful music. Whittaker Announces for Tax Collector. This week’s issue contains the announcement of Mr. J. W. Whit taker, of Sandv Ridge District, as a candidate for Tax Collector. Mr. Whittaker is well known over the county, and is a men or genial personality and ample abil ity to fill the office he seeks In the last campaign he polled a good vote and made many friends, who predict for him this time even much more strength. He is now do ing well in the responsible posi tion of assistant cashier of the new national bank at Jackson, and his many friends here rejoice in his well merited success. The Henry County Teachers Association held its regular mon thly meeting last Saturday m the McDonough City School Audito rium, as previously announced. Prof. W. D. Greene, the President presided, and Prof. W R. Fuller ton acted as Secretary Pro Tom, in the absence of the Secreiary. Miss Christine S. Parks whose illness prevented her attending. Full urogram, as previously pub lished and sent out to the teachers was carried out. The discussions of the assigned subjects were cap ably and illummatingly handled by the leaders; and the teachers eenerall;' entered into the discussion with spirit and enthusi asm. All present joined in announc ing tho occasion and the program an inspiration, and the morning was one of combined profit, and pleasure These monthly meetings are proving to be excellent in many wavs, Instructive in methods of teaching beyond compare, they also bring the teachers together socially and enable each to realize that ho is not alone in facing the trials and problems of the school room. Spinks, of Atlanta, visited his brother, Mr. George Spinks, hero last Tuisday He visited The Weekly while here and added a dollar to our mite of money. Mr G. C. Wise, of the Sixth was in McDonough Wednesday and came to see ns and divided some of his wealth with us. Mr. Wise is one of the most capable and clever farmers of the county’s younger men and believes in making the soil pay tribute to brains and brawn. Mr. John Asa Wells the veteran bailiff of Lowe’s District, visited McDonough Wednesday. Mr. Wells is a young man but one of onr oldest bailiffs in point of ser vice, and a good one too. Mr. H. C. Alexander, of the Sixth, spent Tuesday in our city. Mr. W. T. Stanfield, of Hamp ton, paid a visit to McDonough and a dollar to The Weekly last Friday. Mr. W. J. Bowen, cf Love’s, was in our city Tuesday and made onr heart glad with a good honest dol lar, Messrs. Lemon Brothers spent Wednesday in Atlanta putting in their stock of supplies and access ories in connection with then agency for the Cadillic automobile advertised in this issue of The Weekly. Johnson and Mrs Zachry Thompson entertained all their neighbors at a unique party Wednesday afternoon. All guests, having been n.ques ted to bring thimbles, were given materials and the task of piecing a qnilt. How nimble fingers did fly. Mrs. Phrenic Wilson died at her home near Noah’s Ark ho t Mon day night at 11 o’clock, after a long illness. The remains wore interred at Noah's Ark. aft< r fun eral services conducted «bv the Rev. J. E. England Mrs. Wilson whs about Co years of age and a woman of deep piety and was loved by all tlio commun ity. She is survived by six sons and one daughter. Mrs. Nancy Moseley passe d away at her home in Love’s District last Monday. Though about 70 years of age, she died very sud denly, contracting pneumonia only a short time before her death. • Funeral services were conducted by Elder E. Oglesby at Ozius church at 11 o’clock Wednesday morning, after which the remains were buried at Ozius burial ground. Mrs. Moseley was the widow of the late Mr. Bird Moseley, and was a devout Christian woman, whose good deeds live after licr. She leaves two daughters and one son to uiorrn her d<q arluro. Rev. Sam Campbell and wife are visiting liis mother for a few days. Rey. Campbell is on bis wuy to New York win re he will sail with a party for Palestine, Egypt, Italy and other places of note in Europe and Africa, also he will see Pas sion Play at Oberammergau, Mrs. Campbell will spend one n 01 th in New York and one in Washington D. C. with relatives. Later she will return to McDonough and wait Mr. Campbell’s return. Mr. R. C. Hearn, of Routed, vis* ited onr city Thursday and left us the wherewith for a year’s sub scription. Rumor remarks that we are to have several other warm political races this year, not yet announced. Mr. Joel Bankston rein* mhered The Weekly with a dollar Tues day. Langston’s condition is now critical, with little hope 11,at life can last more than a day or two longer. He has been ill for a long time but has rapidly grown worse during the last few days. a year
