SENRY COUNTY WEEKLY. I’KANIi KEAGAX, Minor. Hoterew! at the postofflea at McDo»- icgh. aa tecond-claca mail mattar. 1 iTtrtisltf Ratea: SI.OO per t»ch par month. Reduction an ctaatflsg »vK : ,ra<iU by apacial agrasmest. McDonough, GArg 19, 191 Broken Faith and A Pledge. Last week we took notice edi torially of rumors that many of us have heard. They were to the ef fect that certain politicians believe Henry County 'can be bought in the corning primary for certain candidates; and that they are pro ceeding in an effort to buy it with whiskey and money. We then made iitie mention of the latter rumor, but discussed the former one, th-.t the County can be changed by money and whis key. But now we wish to notice the rumor that attempts are being made to use whiskey and money in the coming primary in this county. These rumors daily grow thicker and.faster; not only that, hut the man with open eyes who knows the people of our county and spends much time in McDonough, cannot avoid seeing for himself much evidence to verify this ru mor. What, then are we going to do about it? It is for the people themselves to make reply. Not in mere words and discussion; bfltbysuch active hostility to such practices and their proformers that the coward ice which is always a trait of this class of men will prevent their ac complishing their purpose. We know that the good men even loyal to truth ani righteous ness, in Henry County far out number the evil and parchaseable. But when good men are divided rascals reii rewards righteous men have earned and deserve. And when candidates so lower themselves as to engage in such practices, do they not deserve the rebuke of every true man at the ballot box? It' your candidate, my min of character, he elected by your con scientious ballot and th ' bought ballots; to which think you he owes the greater debt? You give him a conscientious vote; he owes you but a conscien tious performance of his official duty; to the debauched ones he o wes; first, his election, or he would not have bought them, and second all favors he cm bestow upon them by reason of the of fice he holds, and he cannot con fine himself to duty and decency in paying debts contracted by de bauching justice and duty: The debt he owes to the evil ones is inconsistent with that he owes you; he cannot pay you, if he pays them. When you pledge yourself, as a lover oi right, to vote for such a candidate, he in turn, tacitly bat with a force as binding as your pledge and requisite to it, pledges a discharge of his official duty in justice to all men and in righteous ness as he sees it. The moment he begins, even by deceit and falsehood, to seek such office, he begins to weaken his power to fulfil that pledge: and when he decends to the depths of degradation of using money and whiskey, or either, he absolutely disqualifies hi nself and destroys forever nis ability to comp y with his marv v promises to you. Tnis then has been a mutual pledge. The candidate has destro yed its mutuality through no act or fault of ycurs. And you are released forever from your pledge, and it becomes your duty to punish his perfidy by your ballot. Judge for yourselPwho, if. any body is guilty of such practices; for you are far more capable of doing it than we and we know you will do your duty in destroying forever such evil forces in politics.
