ON COMPENSATION.
We have long believed that
there is, even here on earth, a
measure of compensation for
every loss we suffer, and some
times, when we find difficulty in
grasping this truth in the midst of
some severe affliction, it has de
manded much exercise of the
will and even some Help beyond
ourselves to enable us to believe
it.
These thoughts are ours in the
effort to find some consolation in
the recent departure for other
shores of two ships of life which
often frequented the same waters
With our own frail bark.
Our walk to our daily work is
often cheered by the children
whom we greet along the way;
sometimes they are at play, some
times trudging schoolward with
their load of book-bound know
ledge.
Now one particulary bright and
sweet spirit of childhood greets

lus no more as we walk to our
j work and is seen no more on the
j street and responds no more to
| the roll call at school. Those
books are all laid aside now and
,we think she is pursuing a far
! more advanced study and, even
as she has journeyed to another
shore, has acquired by such travel
knowledge far transcending all
the accumulated wisdom of the
books left behind.
And herein is the compensation
we comprehend. We doubt not
also that there is even greater
compensation beyond our ken,
some day yet to be revealed to
us. Whereas our walk was form
erly all worldly in the suggestions
it brought to our minds, now a
heavenly light beams upon the
way through the curtains brushed
aside as little Josie entered in and
the remaining children playing in
the streets give us thoughts of
her playing in the streets of the
new Jerusalem, as pictured to us
in Revelations.
And when our walk to work
was ended, we were wont to be
cheered by the greeting of that
splendid young man who was our
neighbor in business. Of course
we now miss his presence, but
we would force ourselves, not to
think of the void here below
made by his passing on; rather we
would have the sight of his wont
ed haunt remind us of the noble
citizenship of that eternal king
dom to which his high qualities
will be contributed for aye; and
so, in the midst of our worldly
business, have heavenly thoughts
to engage us because of him.
And we are sure that those who
best knew and loved these fine
spirits will also find some measure
of compensation in the thoughts
of what they have obtained in ex
change for these earthly places
made vacant.
So in out walks and works we
remember them and that they
have pointed us to “brighter
realms and led the way.”
