DAUGHTERS OF CONFED ERACY OFFER MEDAL Rules of Contest Open to Stu dents. Essays to be For warded by Teachers. The Georgia Division of the United Daughters of the Confed eracy offer again their essay med al for 1913. They do this with the desire of stimulating among the yonug people of the State an inter est in the study of history, especial ly of the history of the war between the States, and again offer a gold medal to the student writing the best essay on the subject assigned. Teachers of the State ore earn estly requested to encourage and uree their pupils to emer the con test. FOR CONTESTATS 1. Subject: “The Gallant John B. Gordon.” 2. The contest is open to all the white children of Georgia under the age of eighteen. 3. The length of the essay to be from 1,000 to 1,500 words. The papers to be typewritten, if pos sible, though that is not essential. 4. Preparation for the essay may be made at home or elsewhere with full use of all references. Essays must be written in the presence of teachers, or member of local committee. 5. Each essay shall be signed with fictitions name,and accompan ied by a sealed envelope addressed with same ficticious name, but containing real name and address of writer and name of school. FOR COMMITTEES 6. Manuscript to be graded upon subject matter and style. 7. The medal will de awarded at dosing exercises of school at or near which it is won. It will be presented by the President of the local chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy. APPOINTMENTS 8. Each member of the State Committee shall have charge of the work in designating Chapters, and shall see to the appointment in each of her chapters of a local committee to take a direct super vision of the work in that Chapter, and to be known as the Chapter Medal Committee. SCHOOLS 9. The principal of each contest ing school shall send to the local committee of his county the best essay from his school, stating at the same time the number of con testants in the school. COUNTY COMMITTEE Each Chapter Committee as an auxiliary to the State Committee shall create or stimulate an interest in the work in her county, shall revive the essay sent in by the contestants in the county and se lect from them the best one to represent the county before the State Committee, and shall send this essay, together with infor mation of the entire number of contestants in the county, to that member of the State Committee within whose jurisdiction the coun ty falls. The entire number of essays thus chosen shall be sent in rota tion to all the members of the State Committee for examination and grading, being retained by each member for a short time only, then forwarded to another member and finally returned to the Chairman of the Committee. The grading of the essays, shall be sent not with the essays, but directly to the chairman by each committee as soon as practicable after completion. Immediately after the receipt of all reports <fcs chairman shall send a tabulated list of them to each member of the committee.
