SCHOOL NEWS OF
HENRY COUNTY.
A Department Devoted to the ln=
terests of all the Schools of
the County.
By 0. 0. Tolleson, County School Superintendent.
Pupils and teachers have grown
so interested in their work recent
ly, it seems, that they have forgot
ten to furnish their share of the
news. Such absorbing interest is
commendable, but the people want
to know what you are doing and
planning when you are so busy.
Please let me have your /lews by
Tuesday afternoon of each week.
because of the peculiar nature
of some of the business brought
before the Board of Education, it
was necessary to postpone the reg
ular meeting from Tuesday to Sat
urday of last week. Then, on ac
count of the sleet, the members
failed to appear, so it was neces
sary to issue the second call.
Gordon, Fairview and Luella
have made application for library
funds, making a total of 15 schools
beginning or increasing their
libraries. It is a significant fact
that every school, except one,
that had a library has already had
their appropration, and that one
* exception has raised the money
twice, but needed other equipment
also and so used their funds.
Union Grove, Rock Spring, Mays,
South Avenue, Union Graded and
Locust Grove have added a teacher
each since the term opened, this
shows progress, but it would have
been much better if these teachers
had been employed at the begin
ning, for the adding of a teacher
meant the reorginization of the
school. This leaves 14 one-teach
er schools in the county. May the
day soon come when there will
not be a single one, for this will
mean that each of these 14 has
failed to satisfy the community
and died or else added another
teacher and thus increased the
efficiency of the school at least
three times.
Mr. Citizen are you helping the
cause of euucation in Henry Coun

you?

The following is a composition
on Arbor Day by a sth grade pupil.
BENEFITS DERIVED FROM
ARBOR DAY.
It is well that we should ob
serve Arbor Day thoughtfully.
And not just Arbor Day but every
day. Weshould take care of our trees
for Arbor Day means Tree Day.
We should strive to make im
provements, and we should not
destroy them like our forefathers.
We should plant trees to take the
place of those that have been de
stoyed thoughtlessly by an older
generation. A place without
trees looks too barren and more
than that we want the shade.
If it wasn’t for trees what would
our little birds do? And if it
wasn’t for the birds what would
the trees do? They keep the in
sects from the trees.
Trees, plants, flowers’ and birds
make us happier and better, for,
without them every thing would
seem strange. A grove is beauti
ful, and at the same time you can
derive a great deal of benefits
from it in several different ways.
Shall we have flowers? Yes by
all means. A place can be im
proved so much by having
flowers growing and blooming,
but it takes a still greater care for
the cultivation of fiowers than
trees.
We have set out twenty-five
rose cuttings and a bed of violets
and clinging ivy. We planted this
to beautify our school ground.
We had a few recitations and
songs on Arbor Day and also a
