Our Women. Selma, Ala. Mr. Editor: In a recent issue of your paper I noticed with pleasure how the Daughters 'of the Confed eracy entertained the thin grey line of Confederate heroes of Henry county. When the Charles T. Zachry Chapter decide to do anything, it is done, as there is no retreat sounded with them. Look! Men and boys of Henry county what those noble women have done to commemorate the heroic deeds of those who followed Lee and Jack son through the sixties. In the park of your beautiful little city they have erected a mon ument to the memory of our fa thers, grandfathers and uncles. What have we erected to the memory of their mothers, grand mothers and aunts? Have we shown our gratitude as sons, grandsons, or as southern gentle men? In Henry county, 1 fear we have not. It is not necessary for me to tell you that there w'e’re Confederate heroes other than those who fol lowed the stars and bars of Dixie. There has been a great deal said for the men who wore the grey and w nt to the battle front. But there has been but little said and nothing done in Henrv county f( r the women who wore the home spun dresses and stayed at home facing all the privations of war. The sorrow's and heart-aches of the soldiers at home w'ill never be told. When the soldier at the front lay dowm to sleep he had an arm ed comrade to stand guard over him. When the soldiers at home lay dowm to sleep there was no picket line around them —only the stars kept watch. I had rather be a soldier at the front, leaving blood-stained tracks on the ground than to hear the cry of little children for bread when I had none to give them. And when the last battle had been fought, the last charge made, the arms forever stacked, and the flag we all love surrendered to over whelming numbers, then the sol- AN IDEAL We have in mind to make the Bank of Stock bridge, relatively speaking, the safest Bank in the State of Georgia. There are those to rise up each day to say we cannot put into effect some of the drastic corrective innovations we have in mind without alienating some of our present bminess, but experience teaches us otherwise. The abuses, due to the overwhelming desire for business, must be overcome, and to this task we have set ourselves with grim determina tion. Some of these problems are: (1) To see that no single name paper comes into the bank unless secured or well rated. (2) To prevent the Bank’s money being used as capital for another’s business (3) To see to it that the officers and directors do not borrow excessively the bank’s money. (4) To make no unusually large loans no matter how attractive. (5) To prevent overdrafts. Open an Account with us. Deposits insured Bank of Stockbridge Stockbridge, Georgia J. D. BOWEN, President W. Now', men and boys of Henry county, let us show to the world the honor, love and gratitude we have for southern woman-hood before all the Confederate heroes have “crossed over the river to rest in the shade of the trees.” And if we will only give “honor to whom honor is due,” there will be standing in the beautiful park in McDonough on next memorial day a monument of Georgia mar ble to the memory of the southern women of the sixties. And when we have crossed the Great Divide others can see that we loved our mother, sister and sweet-heart. G. W. JENKINS. SPEER, The GRADUATE Fits Glass for all Errors of Re fraction.
