If You Enlist. “I think that, of all the experi ences and adventures 1 have had in my life thus far, those I glean ed during my fourteen months in the regular army have had the most profound effect in shaping my destiny “Tne recruiting posters will tell you that a year in the army will teach your boy courage. It will. Also, it will teach him how to die, and in teaching him this it will teach him how to live. And he will learn how to obey, in order that in the later battle of life he may know how to command; it will teach him democracy, and if, after he has learned to defend his country and himself, he is caiied upon to make practical use of his education for the benefit of pos terity, he will learn tenderness and manliness and how to sacrifice without thinking about it. Yes, all pacifists to the contrary not withstanding, lie will learn these things, even while killing his fel low man. And if you show me a man who has been through active service and is now a pacifist and denies this statement, I will take the short end of a modest bet that his record in the War Department archives will prove him a maling erer, on sick report when he wasn’t in the guard house for be- inj£ a dirty, careless, inefficient soldier. Military service in the United States army is a real job with variegated details, many of them unpleasant to some natures, but none of them degrading, and the army is the finest school in the world for teaching a boy courage, self-reliance, cleanliness and ef ficiency.” —Pc ter B. Kyne. Do You Blame Him? A man committed suicide be cause % of a melancholy conviction that he was his own grandfather, and here is his letter he left be hind him —no wonder he killed himself: “1 married a widow with a grown up daughter. My father visited our home very often, fell in love with my stepdaughter and married her, so my father became my son-in-law, and my stepdaugh ter my mother, because she was my father’s wife. After my wife had a son —he was my father’s brother in law and my uncle, for he was the brother of my step mother. My father’s wdte, i. e., my stepdaughter, also had a son — he was, of course, my brother, in the meantime my grandchild, for he was tlie son of my daughter. My wife was my grandmother, be cause she was my mother’s moth er. I was my wife’s husband and grandchild at the same time. And as the husband of one’s grand mother is his grandfather, 1 was my own grandfather.”—Ex. See that soldier. He stands for his country, for you and me. He knows discipline. He stands ready at quick notice to come, to stay, to go—to the e*id of the earth, it his country calls. Is it to guard a bridge? He’s there. Dig trenches? All the same to him. Is it to man the trenches, or to go on the tiring line? Readv. He goes where and when he is need ed. It is hard enough to know the right people; but it is a great deal harder to love the right people. Those who suffer in silence, if they so suffer, have plenty of ways of making their suffering known. It is difficult for a man to love his neighbor as himself and come out on top in every business deal. Some men return from vaca tions with a brown skin; others acquire a brown taste in their mouths. It is just as easy to make people happy as to make them miserable; so why go round with a grouch? Don’t ever assert positively what you would have done in a certain situation. You only think you know. The cat is superior to man in some respects. The cat lias nine lives, while man has difficulty in leading two. When a hen cackles it is gener ally a sign that she has laid an egg. But lots of men cackle with # out having accomplished any thing. The man who fails to come down when the church collection plate is passed should at least give some attention to the preacher. He Felt Like Ninety Nothing will make a person feel old*quicker than disordered kid neys, for when they are not working properly the whole sys tem is infected with poisons that cause aches and pains in all parts of the body. A. \\. Morgan, An gola, La., writes: “Oil, I suffered with pains in my back. I am 49 years old, hut 1 felt like a man 90 years old. Since I took Foley Kidneys Pills 1 feel like 1 did when 1 was 21.” They tone up and strengthen the kidneys, and promptly relieve annoying bladder troubles. The McDonough Drug Co.
