Local U. S. Marine Is Clever Rifleman. Although he has donned the uniform of a sea s.c idler only May 5, Claud A. Babb, of Hamp ton, this county, lias qualified as a marksman in the United States Marine Corps, winning the coveted medal and an increase of pay. He won his spurs at the recent Port Royal, S. C. shooting trials, after experts had put him and fellow Marines through a series of trail ing at the various island camps. During this training the men are taught the tine points and “moods” of the Springfield “30" so that by the time the range is reached they thoroughly under stand the rifle. Then follow les sons in the art of maintaining cor rect shooting positions, each man being coached by an individual instructor. The personal tutelage creates a keener interest amongst the men, range experts say. It is an open secret that thous ands of Marines are now in France ready to take their stand in the cause for democracy and the local boy will be well prepared when the time comes to join them. He is the brother of Mrs. Ola Brown, of Hampton, and joined the Marine Corps at Atlanta, Ga. New Hope. (Last Week’s Letter.) Mr. W. W. Would that our busy toilers could realize that they must enjoy passing days, if they would be happy. The pleasure to which they look forward seldom comes. The man or woman who has not learned the contenment and how to find delight in the present, has little reason to expect it in the fu ture. ———————— » Your subscription, please. F Plan out your life on a big scale, whether you are a farmer’s daugh ter or a shepherdess among the hills, or the flattered pet of a drawing room filled with statuary and pictures and bric-a-brac, stop where you are and make a plan of your lifetime. You cannot be satisfied with a life of frivolity and giggle and indiscretion. Trust the world and it will cheat you if it does not destroy you. The vast feudal estate of the late Jim Smith, said to have been the largest single plantation in the state, is no more one farm. The largest farm sale ever had in the state divided it among forty purchasers. The entire place, fif ty-three farms, brought oyer $374,000, the average of the whole place being $64 60 per acre. The home was sold for over SIOO an acre, a total of $65,638. The praying sinner, who poses as a Christian and yet sends his sons and daughters away from home through mistreatment hasn’t got much chance of proving ex emption from paying the penalty when the final board passes on his actions. —Milledgeville News.
