A VOLUNTEER. Dear Mr. Editor: Will yon please publish this lit tie poem written by a volunteer from McDonough, who is now in Texas serving Uncle Sam : As I sit in this lonely supply room Thinking of days gone by, Oh, how it hurts my feelings— It makes me almost cry. If I were back home in Georgia How happy I would be, My friends around the old fireside Are waiting and longing for me. There’s no place like home a in Georgia, That’s a song that is mighty true, And every time I think of home It makes me feel so blue. The blues are something awful, And you are far from glad, But Still the Blues are nothing But a good man feeling bad. And when we were called to arms This question arose within me, Must I act the part of a coward, Or must I fight for thee? This I can proudly say, Down my back was no yellow streak, I knew my services would be needed, If the U. S. and Germany should break. The big city of Atlanta, Where everything is so fine, Is the place of my enlistment, But was transferred to another clime. Homesickness is worse than all sickness. Bovs, shake it if you can, Assume the position of attention, For you are protecting your land. N ow I have a very good reason To wish myself back home, I’m asking myself the question, “What made me want to roAm?” The reason I’m in Texas, I’ll make it plain to all, Expressing my fighting spirit, I answered duty’s call. Gettys Rosser. Co. B, 19 U. S. Inf., Fort Sam Houston, Texas. The Fruits of Gossip ing and Criticizing. Two of the greatest curses to mankind today is gossip and criti cizm. Homes have been broken up by them. Ambitious men who might have been a credit to the world have been absolutely dis heartened and defeated by them. Character destroyed, business ruined, drunkards made, crimes committed and even thievery. Gossip and criticizm also breed hate and jealousy. In the majority of instances it is intended only as a pastime —a harmless pastime. It is human nature to exagerate. That is why Mr. So-and-so was thought to be drinking by you, your opinion often repeated makes it a seeming reality. When you hear your neighbor’s child scream ing occasionally, it might have been injured in some way instead of “getting an unmerciful beating.” When we say these things, we do not think of the harm it might cause. We would all do well to remember that we cannot remem ber accurately. Why do we make the assertion that John Doe is a hypocrite, or that Mrs. Jones does not love her husband, or that a certain young man is headed for the asylum it he tries to put through a business deal or perfect some invention that seems foolish to us? It is about time that mud sling ing should cease for the sake of humanity and progress. It is through fear of ridicule that keeps many young folks from taking an active oart in church work and social life. It is the, cause of what we call “stage fright.” Cut This Oui-lt is Worth Monsy. The McDonough Drug Co. The Newspaper Man And His Difficulties. We presume that many people think the newspaper men are peristent duns, as they keep re iterating. “Look at the label on your paper,” “move up the date,” “you are behind on your subscrip tion,” “pay what you owe, “pay up,” ‘pay us.’ Now let a farmer or business man place himself in a similar business position and see if he would not do the same'. Suppose the farmer raises a crop of one thousand bushels of wheat, and his neighbor should buy a bushel, of wheat, and his neighbor should buy a bushel, and the price was two dollars or less, and the neighbor says, “I will pay you the sum in a few days.” As the farm er doesn’t want to be small in the matter of small things he says, “all right.” Another comes in the same way until the whole of the one thousand bushels are gone out to the one thousand different persons. No one purchaser con cerns himself about it, and, of course, that could not help any. He does not realize that the farm er has frittered away his crop of wheat in little dribs and that he is seriously embarrassed in his busi ness because his debtors treat it as a small matter, but if all would pay him promptly which they could do as well as not, it would enable him to carry on his busi nesss without difficulty. The above comparison is too true of the difficulties that a newspaper man has to contend with. —Bre- men Gateway. Take Notice. Sometimes tnere are reports over this county that certain young men are deserters from the ser vice of Uncle Sam, when said re ports are utterly false. Such re marks could be interpreted as slanders. This is to remind the public of the above stated fact. Please take notice.' SUBSCRIBER.
