The New World.
The Courier-Jounal on Nov. 12
has an editorial on “The New
I World.” It analyzes the joyous
tumult of Monday and interprets
the significance of the Demonstra
tion, and closes its thoughts in
these words:
It leaves us a new map of the
world. It leaves us, indeed, a
new world. Formerly wherever
on the earth ‘The New World’ was
spoken of the words meant only
the land of the people who had
broken away from all Old World
fetters and established the great
republic which since its existence
has been the refuge or the hope
of the oppressed of all countries
and the inspiration as well as the
example of democracy to all the
earth. But today it is no longer
the New World. It is no longer
aloof and afar in its isolation. It
is but a part, a proud and happy
part, of the New World which un
til yesterday was not. For the
world which until yesterday was
the Old World is today, with us,
the New World, with no* sunder
ing seas nor systems of tyranny
between us.
“Was there prescience in Bis
marck’s declaration that ‘we Ger
mans fear God, but nothing else
in the world ?’ That God who
controls the stars in their courses,
whose invocation on the hun
dredth anniversary of our New
World we can repeat with so vast
ly profounder a significance on
the birth of the New World that
is.
“From out whose hand
The centuries fall like grains of sand.
We meet today, united, free,
And loyal to our land and Thee,
To thank Thee for the era done
And trust Thee for the opening one.
Thou hast here in concord furled
The war-flags of a gathered world,
Beneath our Western fulfill
The Orient’s mission of good will;
And freighted with love’s Golden Fleece,
Send back its Argonauts of peace.”
A Toast to Woman.
“So here’s to woman ! May she
ever remain as she is! If she
must change, let her change more
in the direction of what she is
than in the direction of what she
wants to be !”
After almost a column devoted
to the inferiority of women to men
in the professions, the arts and
business, the writer owns up hand
somely : “The truth is that no
basis of fair comparison can be
established between the sexes —
that in her distinctive character
istics woman is almost another
being. Morally considered, man
is a fiend when compard to wo
man. In the domestic virtues she
is a star-eyed goddess, moving
above the masculine sex in planes
and orbits to which man can never
attain. When we ask for the wo
man who can make a good swal
low-tailed coat, we ought to be
answered in Yankee fashion by
the counter demand to produce
the man who makes a good moth
er. And here we come to what
is really the sublimation of life
and living. All the philosophy, all
the learning, all the skill, all the
muscle, all the steadfeastness
boasted by the masculine sex
might be thrown to the dogs with
out seriously impairing the happi
ness of life, so long as women re
main possessed of those distinctive
virtues upon which families are
builded and society finds its foun
dation-rock.”

I HAVE been using Doctor Cald
well’s Syrup Pepsin for more than
seven years. I believe it saved my little grand
daughter’s life, as she had such terrible spasms,
caused by the condition of her stomach, until
we gave her Syrup Pepsin. Our family thinks
there is no remedy like Dr. Caldwell’s
Syrup Pepsin for the stomach and bowels.”

Prof. B. W. KILGORE, director N. C. Agricultural Experiment Station Says:-
"The lack of Potash with us has been shozvn espeially in cotton, tobacco and potatoes in
coastal plain sections. This has been especially true of cotton and potatoes, more potash having
been used on tobacco, relatively, than on these two crops. ”
Dr. H. W. BARRE, director of S. C. Agricultural Experimet Station Says:-
“I zt ill say that a survey recently made of the cotton situation in South Carolina leads us to
beleve that at least 25 per cent reduction in the cotton crop has resulted this year from lack of
potash. In some cases not more than half a crop has been produced on light land that is very de
ficient in potash. The appearance of the plants indicates that what is known as potash hunger is
responsible for the decreased yield. We are, thereforee, recommending that liberal amounts of
potash be used in fertilizers for cotton next year. At the usual rates of application 1 feel that it
zvill pay to use as much as 3 per cent of potash at the present prices. ”
