SUM SHOWED OUR BACKBONE American Willingness to Give Up Luxury Demonstrated Na tion’s War Conscience. STAND WITH THE ALLIES. By Reducing Consumption People of the United States Averted a Famine at Home in Spite of Low Supplies. The fact that the people of the United States were able to reduce by more than one-hulf million tons their July, August, September and October consumption of sugar proves conclu sively that their war conscience was thoroughly awakened and that the country ns a whole stood ready to fol low the injunctions of the Government Our normal consumption of sugar In the four-month period beginning with July has been 400.000 tons per month, a total of 1,0!'0,000 for the quarter year. In July, when our sugar stringency began to reach its height, consumption was reduced to 200,000 tons. In Au gust only 025,000 tons went into dis tribution and in September only 279 r COO tons. In October the distribution fell to 200,000 tons. If the general public had failed to observe the injunctions of the Food Administration this country would have been in the throes of a sugar famine before the end of August. Our visible supplies weiv so low as to bring great anxiety to those familiar with the sugar situation. They feared that It would he absolutely Impossible to reduce consumption to a point where sugar would no longer be a mere lux ury in the American diet. Few accomplishments of the Food Administration will stand forth so pre dominantly as this reduced consump tion of sugar. I’.y it we have been able to bridge over the period of stringency until the new beet and Louisiana cane sugar crops wore in sight. Now the nation is in a position so (hat if we choose we may return to our normal home use of sugar, and Europe, with the release of ships to go fur afield, can maintain its recent re stricted rations. If, however, those nations are to increase their use of sugar very considerably it must be by our continued sharing with them through limiting our own consump tion. AMERICAN SPIRIT RELIED ON TO WIN. In the light of succeeding events it Is interesting to lecall the confidence with which the United States Food Administrator viewed the gloomy out look in July of 1917, when this coun try had been in the war for less than four months and the Germans were steadily sending the western front Dearer and nearer to Paris. “Even though the situation in Eu rope may be gloomy today,” he de clared in a public statement, “no American who has knowledge of the results already obtained in every di rection need have one atom of fear that democracy will not defend itself In these United States.” LOYALTY IN LITTLE THINGS LAST PROOF OF PATRIOTISM Americans without murmuring cut their sugar allowance from four pounds a month to three and then as loug as need be to two pounds for loy alty’s sake. Food Will Win the World. America earned the gratitude of al lied nations during war by sharing food. America under peace may win the world's good wL\ by saving to share. Look upon the faults of otheis as you would have them look up on yours. Red Cross guns are charged with tenderness. * TT gives me the greatest pleasure to tes tify that the work has been conducted upon the broadest lines of service, not merely to the gallant soldiers of the army of the great Republic of the West, but to all they could assist. The high quality of character of those conducting this work needs no praise, but I affirm that in my opinion it would have been impossible to have afforded the boys that inspiration and succor they need—and which they so richly deserve— without your efforts. — A. Lloyd George Prime Minister of Great Britain 240 Pound Pigs. With corn above 50 cents hogs eat their heads off very quickly. The hog that takes two or three months to get on full feed never brings you a profit. When you are ready to put your shoats on feed, begin with the B. A. Thomas’ Hog Medicine. Use regularly and watch your shoats round out into fat hogs in nine months —hogs going well over 200 pounds and as high as 240 pounds. Figure the average feeding and you will see why the B. A. Thomas medicine is a good investment. Try feeding out your hogs on this plan and if you are not more than pleased, we will refund the cost of the medicine.
