As several hundred freight employ ees of the railroad were out on strike, and as the records of the freight of fice were burned, the exact loss is not known. However, W. W. ’Waits, su perintendent of the transfer yards, which are the largest In the South, as serted that the loss would be at least one million dollars and might reach a million and a half. The discovery of the fire was made by Waits when he cauhgt sight of the flames which were then leaping about fifty feet into the air from the roof of the transfer office. He immediately notified Chief Cody at the fire headquarters who rushed to the scene, which is fully a mile from the city limits, with two local fire com panies. Mr. Waits also telephoned all the lo cal offices of the Southern Railway for help, and thirty-six large switch en gines were dispatched to the fire, which had already spread to the heav ily laden freight cars. For fully an hour the engine raced with the fire, and more than a hundred freight cars were coupled to the locomotives, which speedily took them a good distance from the flames. Fifteen of the twenty-four storing tracks were burned through stone for stretches of more than an eighth of a mile. The main freight and passen ger lines, however, were not damaged and traffic was not disturbed. The yard office was 126 feet long and 26 feet wide, and was two sto ries in height. It was surrounded by fo\'” platforms, two on either side, which were about 750 feet long. The building and two platforms were to tally destroyed. Many of the freight cars destroyed contained shipments that had been stored in the yards since the clerks went out on strike, having been set aside until they could be given the proper routings.
