And How About Mother ? The prevalent excuse for the high cost of living is the increase in the wages paid and the shorter hours for labor. The once well known domestic helper, the hired girl, has almost disappeared and the few specimens now in cap captivity are asking for the eight hour day enjoyed by her sisters in the mills and factories. All the well known arguments are being presented and it is more than likely that the '’maid” who has succeeded the old fashioned “hired girl” will win out. And suppose she does, the problem will remain unsolved. Those who can afford to keep servants may be able to adjust their home arrangements to meet the conditions proposed, but how about the households where no servants are kept ? We are talking now about more than ninety-five per cent of the homes in Jones county where the house hold work, whether for pleasure or drugery, is done by mother. There is no eight-hour day with Saturday afternoon, all day Sun day and every evening off for this slave of labor. She is still required to be stirring long before the whistle blows in the morning that her man may be sent to his day’s work with a good breakfast. All day long she toils in the kitchen or about the house, and when her man has finished his eight-hour stunt on the job, mother must greet him at home, not only with a smile, but with a well cooked meal. It is not necessary to men tion the endless round of little and big things that fill in her daily program. She is at work long before the bread winner starts his day, and long after he has finished his evening meal and sits down with pipe. At last when she is through and wound the clock she comes into the sitting room and tackles the mending. No eight hour schedule for mother, that loyal, patient soul who is the very rock upon which the Republic is founded. Why not a mother’s strike ? No, it will never be, for the true mother receives compen sation be>ond all wage scales in the joy and satisfaction of seeing her home well-kept and her loved ones happy. —Jones County News. Times Have Changed. A friend of Senator Sorghum encountered the solon on the steps of the capitol and after passing the time of day remarked play fully: '“Senator, how comes it you aren’t making any of your famous speeches these days?” But the senator was ready for him. “Times have changed,” he re plied without hesitation. “Now it isn’t all easy for a man with silk hat and frock coat to assert he is saving the country all by himself, and say it at an audience that’s all khaki uniforms and overalls.” When a man passes the thirti eth mile post and has loved no good woman, he has lost his best chance of life for happiness and the sooner he calls a halt and thinks it over the better. Housework in Hot Weather. Hot weather brings no relief from housework drudgery. If anything, woman’s work is more trying. Overwork and worry cause kidney trouble, resulting in backache, sore muscles, stiff joints, rheumatic pains, always tired feel ing and other distressing symp toms. Mrs. Robt. Blair, 460 S. 20th St., Terre Haute, Ind., writes: “After taking Foley Kidney Pills backache stopped and my kidneys were restored to healthy, normal notion. lam also free from those tired spells and headaches and my vision is no longer blurred.” Mc- Donough Drug Co. Cut Them Out. A town, unlike a city, is no place to foster jealousies and nourish contentions. All should learn to know that whatever will conduce to the welfare of a town cannot injure her citizens. The disposi tion made manifest by her citizens point to her downfall or her rise. The character of the people make the town, not her structures, tow ering houses, domes and monu ments, and when people lose in terest in the promotion of their town they need not hope to thrive. Harmony among the people of a community is indicative of its pro gress. Farmers cannot be at variance with one another and prosper; merchants cannot, nor can any similar organization or community. An interesting and peofitable trip that every motorist should take, but seldom think of, is a trip under the car to seq the condition of things there. The Best Physic. When you want a pleasant physic take Chamberlain’s Tablets. They are easy to take and mild and gen tle in effect. They are highly prized by people who have become acquainted with their good qnaii ties. They only cost a quarter. For sale by Horton Drag Co. You may set it down as a fact that there isn’t a twelve-year-old boy in the neighborhood who hasn’t his opinion of you —and he wouldn’t be slow about expressing it either, if a stranger should ask him about it. Every man is al ways making character whether he is doing anything else or not. Why not build character that you may ever look back upon it with pride. A Great Remedy. The merits of Chamberlain’s Colic and Diarrhoea Remedy are well known ar.d appreciated, but there is occasionally a man who had no acquaintance with them and should read the following by F. H. Dear, a hotel man at Dupny er, Mont. “Four years ago I used Chamberlain's Colic and Diarrhoea Remedy with such wonderful re sults that T have siime recommen ded it to my friends.” For sale by Horton Drug Co. The Savannah News calls at tention to the resources of the United States in the following paragraph, which gives some idea of the productivity of this country. It says: The United States with 6 per cent of the world’s land pro duces 66 per cent of the world’s cotton; 75 per cent of the world’s coal; 30 per cent of the world’s gold, 40 per cent of the world’s silver; 40 per cent of the world’s zinc; 50 per cent of the world’s aluminum, and 60 per cent of the world’s copper; and makes 85 per cent of the world’s automobiles. There was never a time in the history of this town when the readers of this paper were so in terested in the advertising col umns as they are today. With prices of everything up in the clouds, the average man or woman is keenly alive to the possibility of shaving off a cent or two in the price of necessities, and watches the ads like a hawk in the hope of finding some relief. The WISE merchant takes advantage of this and places his propositions before the people each week. “What made Latin a dead lan guage, pa?” “Oh, I guess some body doctored it.” —The Cartoons Magazine. The idea that hard wood is any better than soft for fuel has been found erroneous. You'll Do Better at Home.
