If the farmers of Butts county remain in tneir present state of mind there will be a tremendous cut in cotton acreage next season. There is no doubt of the fact that we have reached the point where other crops will have to be grown, and less reliance placed on cotton. The boll weevil or no other kind of pest ever hurt a country that produced its own supplies with a surplus to sell. — Jackson Progress-Argus. Our contemporary states# truth that cannot be disputed. The past two years the farmers of Ter rell were more prosperous than ever before in the history of the county, due to diversification of crops upon the arrival of the boll weevil. Besides raising their own supplies and some to sell, they marketed each year a million dol lars’ worth of peanuts, shipped a hundred or more carloads of hogs and cattle, grew their own wheat for flour and produced 20,000 bales of cotton as a surplus. This year misguided by the fact that a few farmers who planted cotton heavily made a “pile” last year under unusually favorable condi tions —conditions which occurred only at inleryals through a period of years —the farmers of this sec tion increased their cotton acreage and neglected other crops. With a prospect of the smallest cotton yield ever known here, they see their mistake now, and it’s safe to predict that the cotton acreage will be materially reduced another year and attention again given to those crops which brought unpre cedent prosperity. There can be no lasting pros perity and independence on the farm without diversification of crops. —Dawson News. It is said that exposure to vveath er casues greater destruction to farm implements than using them. Paris. —An appeal to the British soldiers dictated by the then Gen eral Foch, asking them to remem ber their forefather’s victory over Napoleon, inspired them to attack the Germans and recover the ground they had lost before the gas wave at the second battle of Ypres, writes Colonel Feyley in the Journal de Geneve. Before the asphyxiating gas both British and French had been obliged to give ground. The then General Foch intended to recover the former positions at ail costs, according to Colonel Feyler. He asked Gen. Sir John French to co operate with him. “Impossible,” replied French; “my men are ready to hold here, but I do not feel that 1 can demand of them, in their present condition further sacrifices in attacking.” Foch expressed surprise: “Their morale is low,” he said. “Why don’t you launch a proclamation ? Something like this: ‘British sol diers, forward. You who have vanquished the great Napoleon, shall it come to pass that you will permit the lowly Germans to drive vou from your positions and re tain them ?’ How is that?” asked French, greatly interested. “P!ease repeat it.” And at the dictation of Foch, French wrote out out the procla mation, which was given out to the troops the next day. The next morning the British soldiers hit the line and recovered all the lost ground. Birds of prey are not endowed with the gift of song. This Means You.
