THE KU JCLUX KLAN, Police Officials, Mayors, Reve nue Officers and Others En dorse Knights of the Ku Kiux. On last Thursday evening at 7 o’clock there was something mys terious and at the same time thrill ing appeared on the streets of Mc- Donough. About the hour above mentioned some one spied three objects approaching the square from the direction of the court house, marching under “Old Glo ry,” carrying an illuminated cross and a cornet. When the Confect erate monument was reached they halted and blew a signal from the cornet, and immediately from an> direction you might look you could see other white robed Ku Klux coming to the rendezvous. These robed figures then paraded the streets of town, returning to the monument, and then marched to the Masonic hall. The following extracts will show clearly the motives and purposes of this celebrated and mysterious organization : Law enforcement officers, state and national, Congressmen, minis ters, mayors, and a host of other prominent citizens from every sec tion of the country have emphat ically answered critics of the Ku Klux Klan by unqualified endorse ment of the organization and the principles on which it is founded. Among these endorsements, one of the most notable is that from Bishop Fitzpatrick, of the African Meth. Episcopal Church, whose signed letter to Col. Wm. J Sim mons, imperial wizard of Knights of the Ku Klux Kian, gives the lie to those enemies of the organiza tion who assert the Klan is the enemy of the negro and is seek ing to create racial prejudice. Ex tracts from some of these endorse ments are given herewith: From Congressman Wm. D. Up shaw, of the Fifth Georgia Dis trie!: “If anybody doubts the patriotic purpose of the reincar nated Ku Klux Klan, or questions the wisdom of its organization, he has but to read the press report of the recent speech of Col Wm. .1 Simmons, imperial wizard, in the Atlanta theater. Packed to stand ing room even in the gallerjes, that great throng sat or stood for three hours, listening the wonder fully interesting story of the ‘birth and re birth of the Ku Klux Klan.’ It was a fascinating, inspiring mes sage —a message of love and loy alty, of beauty and bravery, of patriotism and purpose, of human interest and uncringing heroism, of community peace and even handed justice, of Anglo Saxon achievement and unhindered An glo-Saxon guardianship of the South’s best ideals and the Na tion’s h ghest happinc ss.” From J T. Moore, chief of po lice, and J. L. Couch, mayor of Columbus, Ga.: “I take this meth | The Discomforts .Si fg of Life are gg|| Relieved WE HAVE— Cold Cures and Cough Cures for your relief. Seventeen members of this Klan volunteered their serv ices and assisted the police depart ment during a recent epidemic of burglaries. They did good work, and their services were appreci ated by the police commissioners and myself. 1 think an oganiza tion like the Ku Klux Klan is a blessing in any community.” “ I heartily endorse the above.” —J. L. Couch, mayor of Columbus. Ga. From E. S. Garner, Sheriff of Gwinnett County, Ga.: “1 do not believe the Ku Klux was to blame for the recent lawlessness in Gwin nett and had nothing to do with intimidating negroes My best in formation is that the Ku Klux Klan is trying to discover the guilty parties in order to bring them to justice. I believe the Ku Klux Klan is seeking to aid law enforce ment.” From D. «J. Gantt, Federal su pervising prohibition enforcement agent for the Southern States, with headquarters in Atlanta : “ 1 feel that I have the support of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan in enforcing my part of the law —the prohibition part.” From J. D. McMillan, prominent Florida banker, at Winter Garden: “ The Ku Klux Klan stands for law and order, only ; intimidates no one ; had no part in recent race riot. Members stood guard thro’ three long nights protecting lives and property in our colored sec tion. Klan helps law in every case where help is needed, and co-ope rates with officers when desired.” From Bishop I. N. Fitzpatrick, African Methodist Church • “As the president of the Colored Law and Order League (a chartered institution) 1 write tp thank you for the sympathy and kindness shown me by you when at your office last week. Allow me to say that my heart swallowed with gladness when von told me of the purpose of the Ku Klux Klan or ganization, not becituse 1 am ex pecting benefits myself, but for the great principles that underlie the organization. God bless you and your co workers. I will call Monday as you told me to do. May the blessings of God rest upon you and yours is my sincere prayer.” W. J.
