CALIFORNIA OR SAPIRO PLAN
FOR MARKETING COTTON CROP
Atlanta, April 6—ln reports
reaching the State Department of
Agriculture it is generally agreed
that no meeting more important
to the farmers, business interests
and the State generally, has been
held in years, than that which has
been called in Atlanta for April 12,
to devise ways and means to put
into effect here the California or
Sapiro plan for the orderly and
profitable marketing of the cotton
crop.
Recent action of the Elbert
meeting which indorsed the Cali'
fornia plan, as applied to cotton,
and put itself squarely back of the
Atlanta meeting, has met with
widespread response over the
State, and there is every indica
tion that the conference will be
well attended by representatives
from every section. Practically
every other cotton State has taken
hold of the rpatter along similar
lines, and advices received by
Commissioner J. J. Brown point
to the strongest co-operation
throughout the cotton belt, upon
the new plan of marketing the
crop.
It is strongly urged by Commis
sioner Brown that every County
in Georgia be represented in the
forthcoming meeting by from three
to five delegates. It is anticipated
that business, as well as agricul
ture, will be strongly represented,
since there is practically no interest
in the State which is not vitally
affected by the success or lack of
the cotton grower.
It is at least interesting to note
that cotton merchants and others
associated with them, are coining
around more and ,inore to the
producers’ point of View, Commis
sioner Brown said. I have noted
this in their recent advertisements
and interviews. They are evi
dently realizing more than ever
that their own business is depen
dent upon the farmer getting a
fair return upon his product, and
in manyinstances they are expres
sing an apparent willingness to
help him. 4
It is interesting also to note the
attitude of the new administration
at Washington, as expressed by
Secretary of Agriculture Wallace,
who is quoted as saying: “There
will be no further meddling on the
part of the government with the
prices of farm products, qnd no
further government drives for the
purpose of beating down the
prices of farm prices, It benefits
the consumer but little, and only
serves to impoverish the producer
of those products.”
“We are going lo organize and
put in the California plan of mar
keting, thereby taking control of
our product of the hands of the
exchange hears and speculators;
and if the administration will not
only pursue the policy stated by
Secretary Wallace, but will help
where it can, we will have no dif
ficulty whatever in putting over
this proposition in a big way,
thereby assuring to the producer
for the future, a price which will
pay him his cost of production and
the reasonable profit to which he
is entitled.
“With substantial acreage re
duction now assured and the Cali
forma plan coming as a result of
the Atlanta meeting'of April 12, and
similar meetings in other states, I
feel that the present outlook is
brighter now than we have had
in many months. We must get
together now and make the April
meeting the biggest and best thing
Georgia has ever known.”

Trial of Mr. Barley-Corn.
Mr. John Barleycorn was arrest
ed by the revenue officers, Mr.
Grapejuice anl Mr. Lemonade.
!He was brought before the Su
' preme Court of the United States
| for trial. The charge laid against
| him was “Arrested for making the
! country drunk.” Judge Prohibi*
| tion set at the head of the court.
The lawyer for Mr. Barleycorn was
Mr. Al. K. Hoi. The lawyers for
the nation were Mr. Coca-Cola and
Mr. Green River. After much dis
cussion the case was given to the
jury, which was composed of Mr.
Milk Shake, Mr. Chocolate Milk,
Mr. Ice Cream Soda and friends of
Mr. Prohibition.
After the jury had thought on
the case for a long time and stated
both sides they rendered the ver
dict that Mr. John Barleycorn
should be‘ banished from the
United States forever. There was
great weeping and gnashing of
teeth at this from Mr. Barleycorn’s
Piends. Mr. Moonshine promised
Mr. Barleycorn before be l eft that
he would do all in his power to
comfort the weeping friends.
Mr. Barleycorn packed up and
sailed for Cuba. Many of his
friends followed him and I will
drop out a hint that you can find
him in Cuba on West Street any
time you wish. Many of Mr. Bar
leycorn’s grandchildren and rela
tives have wandered back to the
U. S. They are Mr. Shoe Polish,
Mr. Wine of Pepsin, Mr. Grain
Alcohol, Mr. Hair Tonic, and Mrs.
Virginia Dare. These relatives
with help of Mr; Moonshine and
Mr. Wildcat Stiff are doing their
best to keep alive the memory of
th» ir beloved Mr. John Barleycorn
in the minds of the people. —“High
