Cotton is selling iri Covington today

Fancy grades bringing better prices.
A quantity of grain will be sow¬
ed in Newton this fall. Diversi¬
fied farming seems to have taken
possession of our farmers.
Some of Clark’s friends are get¬
ting uneasy about that formal an¬
nouncement. This paper predicted
a month ago that he would never
announce.
One ot our old citizens remarked
yesterday that a frost was not se¬
vere enough to drive a rattlesnake
to his winter quarters. It requires
a freeze to do it.
Clark’s time is taken up in an
sweriugjetters declining invitations
to “jint spute” with Hoke. He
persist in saying that he will an¬
nounce in the near future.
Judge Dick Russell will open his
campaign for governor in a speech
in Atlanta November 1st. He has
invited Hons. Hoke Smith and
Clark Howell to a joint debate.
--
Governor Terrell ha9 offered a
reward of $200 for the arrest of
Alga Bachelor, the negro, who
killed constable J. E. Darby last
Saturday over in Walton comity,
The race for governor of Geoi
gia is beginning to warm up. The
entries will b.e: Hoke Smith,
Clark Howell, Dick Russell, ji m
Stnith and probably Col. Estill of
Savannah.
Miss Alice Roosevelt who has
just returned to the United States
from a trip around the world, must
pay $60,000 custom duty on valua¬
bles purchased and given her while
on the trip.
Two hundred farmers in con
ventionin Fayette comity have
agreed to sell not mote than half
their cotton made this year for
eleven cents and none of it for
less than 10 cents.
The farmers will soon be as
well organized as any other class.
They have already begun prtceing
their cotton instead of allowing
speculators and foreign spinners
to price it for them.
If a farmer is just determined to
sell his cotton for less than 10 cents
a pound he can do it. All he will
have to do is to rush it to market,
run down the buyer and compel him
to take it. It is simple enough.
The seasons couldn’t be more
propitious for sow ing small grain,
and small grain crop ore essential
to agricultural prosperity. There
ought to be a large acreage put in
oats and wheat. Grain properly
put in this month, will not be apt
to be winter killed.
The Mansfield Leader under
the guiding genius of Editor J. E.
Taylor,is one of the most credita¬
ble, interesting and valuable of our
exchanges, He is doing a great
work for Mansfield and his efforts
seem to be rewarded by a good
advertising patronage by the local
merchants.
High and Low Pianc Politics.
The Sunday papers, recently con¬
tained the announcements Temple of two j
candidates for office—John .
Graves for the Senate, and Clark
Howell for Governor, To read the !
two productions and compare them
M ill furnish an interesting study or
men. It will afford a tine lilustra
tion of the high plane a d the 1 w
plane candidate, of the mau who
seeks office through merit ana cf
the one who sc—ks it solely through
political cunning and the alleged
demerit of »u opp.meat.
Graves makes no as
sank upon the character of his op¬
ponent. He rightly concedes to j
him the high character which he I
justly claims for himself. He does
not deal in inuundoes and false j |
charges against his hn.orable op¬
ponent, and seek to cover up weak¬
nesses of its own by exaggerating
or manufacturing, out of hand,
those of the man he opposes.
He doesn’t wish to deceive the
people, and so he takes them fully
into his confidence—telling just
what, as to principles and policies,
his election would mean. It is the
deliverance of a true man to men
equally true with himself, and en¬
titles him to the respect of the sup¬
porters of Bacon, not less than to
that of his own.
Drop now to the plane ot the
mere shifty politician, and cdusider
the other announcement. It is
called “preliminary” by its author
because he knows it does not con
tain the things which concern the
people and which they wish to
know, that is, for what his candida¬
cy stands. It is full of insinuations
and innuendoes and false charges
against an opponent better than
himself. There is nothing open or
manly in it towards his opponent,
or fair towards the people whose
support he is asking—not one of
whom knows what of policy or
principle his candidacy embodies.
Every intelligent reader will see
in the i i preliminary” the past
master in quibbling, sophistry and
low cunning, but he will look in
vain tor the true man, who has no
concealments from the people, and
who would be ashamed to claim,
as a virtue in himself, the alleged
short comings of others.
The contrast will necessarily be a
painful one to Candidate Howell s
supporters—to ikose of them, at
least, who prefer candor to cun
» ad manly openness to the
arts of the mere political trickster.

“I wish to say a few words in praise ot
Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diar¬
rhoea Remedy,” says Mrs. Mattie Burge,
of Martinsville, Ya. *T suffered Irom
chronic diarrhoea for ten years and during
that time tried various medicines without
obtaining any permanent relief. Last sum
mer one ot my children was taken with
cholera morbus and I procured a bottle of
this remedy. Only two doses were required
to give her entire relief. 1 then decided to
try the medicine myself, and did not use
all of one bottle before I was' well and I
