The program committee announces a
ceaseless series of entertainment for
the day. A Mg automobile parade,
open air hand concerts, public speak¬
ing. doule beade,. ball game, a military
tournament and a street l>all at night
are features worth traveling miles to
take part In.
Governor-elect Harris of Georgia
has signified his intention to attend
tiie big event and will he on the pro¬
gram. Governor Trammel of Florida
will attend with tin* Florida delega¬
tion. The fourteen Dixie Highway
commissioners and the governors of
the seven states through which the
Highway pass will also he invited.
Cash prizes will he offered for the
prettiest decorated automobile in the
parade and for the prettiest float.
Other valuable prizes for the automo¬
bile driving the greatest distance to
atttend the celebration will he an¬
nounced later.
With such men on the program as
Governor Harris, Governor Trammel.
C. .T. Haden, president of the state
Chamber of Commerce, Chas. Crisp,
congreessman from tlie third congres¬
sional district. Hugh Dorsey, Atlanta
attorney. Clark Howell and W. 1 •
Anderson, Dixie Highway Commis¬
sioner, the mid day open air meeting
promises to break all records for the
drawing qualities.
A double header ball game imtf

tap during the afternoon of the fifth
Montezuma and Dawson, old rivals
will probably be brought here for this
attraction.
A special competitive drill will be
staged by the second regiment Georgia
National guards. Five hundred sold¬
iers will be in the event. Five brass
bands and the Macon Drun corps will
help liven things up.
The crowning feature of the entire
day will be the big fancy dress ball
polled off on the streets of the city.
An entire block will be roped off. de¬
corated and brilliantly lighted. Ib
the queen of the hall will be crowned,
and her subjects make merry; brass
bands will furnish the music for this
event.
Final plans fo r this big celebration
will be announced later by the pro¬
gram committee. The fifth is going to
lie a big thing in the way of celebra¬
tions, anq ever lover of a good time
is Invited to make arrangements to
be in Americas on that date.

ed re'-vd and cussed, and it is all
taken f h i r and easy because we didn’t
kiek in time. Well, if ou r representa¬
tive don't make some changes 1 do
not know what will he next.. It loos*,
like they want all incorporations to
rule in everything. They come and
take our land any how and decrease
the value of the rest and the people
gives it in just like they always did,
and here comes the tax equalizer and
raises our tax and never saw ou r laud
in their lives before. Don’t know the
location, situation or anything abut it.
Now l want them forced to go and see
land before raising the taxes. It might
he that they did not do this. I think
they did not raise the right land in
H( „ne locations. We have the poorest j
opportunity of any class of people in
the world. No railroads at our doors,
not much public roads. We ask for
help on the public roads. Promises
don’t work what roads we have al¬
ready have or build any new ones,
either. But when there are candidates >
they will come and promise just to
get you to vote for them.
Now is the time, don’t wait until
next year. Pick out your man now’
that will do to all alike, taking due
notice of the situation and be govern¬
ed accordingly. There were some sub¬
jects mentioned before in regard to !
reducing the number of officers in the ;
county. I am in favor of any re¬ I
duction of officers if it reduces tax. 1
have to work all the time because I
have to help keep up so many officers.

We are anxious to see that all lines owned by
other parties and connected with us are kept in such
condition as to furnish efficient service. Where the
owners of rural lines are responsible for their upkeep,
we want to co-operate with them.
All lines require a thorough overeauling occa¬
sionally if the best service is to be obtained. We
recommend that every line connected with us ts
overhauled at least once a year, and that at least one
experienced telephone man assist in this work. The
cost of this work when divided among all the patrons
of the line, makes the amount paid by each man
small, and this cost will be more than offset by the
improved service.
If the owners of rural telephone lines in this sec¬
tion are experiencing trouble with their service, we
will appreciate their talking the matter over with our
Manager or writing us fully We will gladly do
what we can toward helping you improve the con¬
dition of your line.

The National Wholesale Liquor
Dealers Association held their annual
meeting in Cincinnati recently. The
President declared that “the liquor
business contends that they are simply
supplying a want and a need.” So
they would pose as public benefactors,
when scientists have declared that al¬
cohol is a poison that the human sys¬
tem does not “need,” and the “want”
is the result of a depraved appetite
He and Lord George have opposite
views on the liquor question. Lord
George says liquor is destroying the
efficiency of the! English workmen,
while this man says. “It adds to the
efficiency, producing stronger and
healthier minds, is a greater preven¬
tive for crimes of all kinds, and causes
a lesser demand for public institutions,
such as jails, hospitals for the insane,
feeble-minded, etc., than would be re¬
quired under prohibition, or total ab¬
stinence.” Wonderful, wonderful dis¬
covery ! But where is his proof? what
What town with open bar-rooms can
tie cite as showing less crime and less
use for jails than a prohibition town?
He also adds, “it relieves more misery
than it causes, produces more joy
than sorrow.” Go ask the wives of
drinking men who wait during long
weary hours the return of drunken
husbands only to receive curses and
cruel blows, or. as sometimes hap¬
pens. to witness a darling child killed
by its insanely drunken father, how
much misery liquor relieves, o r how
much more joy than sorrow it gives
One speaker said. “Prohibition is gen¬
erally an accompanying circumstance
of social and religious decadence, of
mutilated morality, and political hys¬
teria.” When a business is reduced
to the necessity to bolster itself up
with shell glorifying false statements
as these, it is as these, it is tottering
to its fall, and may the Lord hasten
the day when our nation will no longer
lie cursed with a traffic that is ruin¬
ing bodies and souls.
