PLAY MONROE TAURSDAY-FRIDAY
LAST WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON
IN PITCHERS BATTLE LASTING
TWELVE INNINGS—BEST GAME
OF SERIES.
Last Wednesday afternoon the last
game of the series between Covington
and Montieello was called promptly
at 4 o’clock to the delight of about 600
fans and spectators.
The game was a pitchers battle form
start to finish. Score was tied in the
last half of the sixth, and was in the
last half of the twelfth before the local
boys crossed the plate with the win¬
ning run. There was only one man
out with Newsom and Worsham on
base when Battle pasted a clean one
to right field, scoring Newsom, this,
of course, ended the game with a socre
of 6 to 5 in favor of Covington.
I’ll is was easily the best game of the
season, it being close and exciting from
the first half of the first, inning to the
last half of the twelfth. The Monti
eqlio boys did some nice work, as well
as the local hoys, and there was no
rowing on the grounds. Dr. Turner,
of Oxford, umpired, and he is to be
commended on his decisions.
The battery for Covington were
Ghessling and Newsom and for Monti¬
eello. Collier and Gibson. Collier and
Gheesling were about equally matched
and both did excellent work. Struck
out by Gheesling 14, by Collier 10.
Base on balls by Gheesling 2, by Col
lie r 0. Stolen bases by Newsom. Bar¬
nes. Battle, Persons and Gibson. Three
base hits by Ballard and Gheesling.
Two base hits by Newsom and Tolle
son. Time 2:35. P T mpire Turner.
The following is a box score kept
as well as eonld be expected by one
man during such an exciting game:

MONROE THURSDAY AND FRIDAY
Thursday afternoon of this week the
Covington team goes to Monroe for a
game and Friday of this week Monroe
will come here for a game.
It is said that Monroe has one ot t m
best amateur teams in the state and
that she proposes to give Covington a
run for her money. With the team
that Covington is now playing we do
not see why we can’t go up against any
ameteur team in the state and we want
to say right here that we believe that
in Battle and Gheesling we have two
of the very best pitchers that can be
found anywhere outside of professional
baseball. Newsom, Covington’s catcher
is all that can be desired. He is one
of the best that has ever played here
and a good clean ball player. The in¬
field is fast and the outfield good. So
taking the local team as a whole, we
could not do better. All they need is
that so long as the Covington team
puts up the ball that they are playing
now that they will continue to get the
support that they deserve.
Come out Friday nfternon and let’s
fill the grand stand with a live bunch
of “rooters” and admirers of the na¬
tional game.

BUSINESS HOUSES TO
HAVE HALF HOLIDAY
BUSINESS MEN OF THE CITY TO
CLOSE PLACES OF BUSINESS ON
EACH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON
IN JULY AND AUGUST.
Tin 1 stores and bu.sinesss houses of
the city of Covington will give their
clerks a half holiday of each week be¬
ginning with Wednesday of next week
and continuing throug August
This plan is in operation in many of
the cities of tlie state, both larger and
smaller than Covington and it is be¬
lieved that the business men will like
the plan. We believe that this is a
good plan for we have heard off no
town in the state that closed last year
that will not close again this year.
The half holiday will not mean any¬
thing to the merchants if they all close
and it will gi\> the clerks of the town
as well as the business men of the town
a half day of each week to enjoy a trip
or see a good ball game.
We think that it would be possible
fo r the Covington baseball team to ar¬
range a gome of baseball each Wednes¬
day during these two months and that
would give everyone an oportunity to
go that wished, if they had nothing
better to do and we know of no bet¬
ter way of spending an afternoon.
If all the business houses have not
as yet agreed to close we trust that
they will before next Wednesday.
The following have signed to close
up until the time we go to press:
