w. C. T. U. NOTES.
Du' riirht against alcohol was at firs
alTie d on mainly on moral grounds by
( 'nttfu-hors ,
and other religious workers.
V p is being considered from an
.
economic standpoint. Eyes of business
are bo-inning to see th e waste in the
manufacture and that the use of it
makes men less reliable, less steady,
leL elfieient, and more ready of the to Color eom
n i t crime. The warden
, 90 cent
ad0 state prison says that p er
t l,e crimes for which men are sent
that institution are due either dir
f( ,iy or indirectly to liquor. One of
the strongest arguments against li
quor is that when ther e is danger of
a s( ,rioiis strike. “Uncle Sam” has the
saloons closed, and Mayor Woodward
did the same when he thought there
ff as danger of a mob. Let us hear the
testimony of some distinguished men:
General Hamilton (English), “Wjiis
key paralizes the power and th e life of
riv finest and bravest troop* in the
wor ld." Czar Nicholas II: “The pros¬
perity of the national treasury must
ant lie made dependent upon the moral
M1U 1 material ruin of my people.” Prof.
p r stadelman (Berlin) “The conse¬
.
quences of alcoholism are much more
far-reaching and incomparably more
destructive than those from tubercu¬
losis;' Count Von llaesler of German
\rmy: "The soldier who abstains al¬
together is the best man. He can ac¬
complish more, march better and is a
better soldier than the man who drinks
eve n moderately.” Theodore Roosevelt:
■It is strange that we always find
whiskey and crooked politics hand in
kind. It is now a question of whether
the liquor interests are to dominate
your public life, and dominate your
government.” And so we might mul¬
tiply e v idence against, but we forbear.
