been truthfully said of the American
flag. But they will fall,»aud it is the
story of their fall fh Covington which
we must relate.
Mr. Emory .Teffares. of Porterdale,
was driving his jitney leisurely along
in front of the court house in Coving¬
ton Tuesday morning, when he was
• hailed from the rear by a prospective
patron.
Mr. Jeffares turned to the rear, which
was natural. The jitney also turned,
wth its master’s eyes, which was just
obedience.
The turn was also a patriotic one as
the ear turned toward the tall flag i«de
and ran directly against the i>ole.
Just like our country itself, our coun¬
try’s flag couldn’t resist an automobile
and had to yield. The steel [h.Ic was
broken in three pieces, fortunately fall¬
ing so that nobody was hurt by it.
Patriotic hands tenderly gathered up
the colors and they now await the re¬
pair of the pole or the construction of
a new pole.
Some citizens have suggested that
the flag should be about twenty feet
J higher and it is probable that the new
pole may be made that much taller.
Mr. Jeffares was charged with a city
offense and -in the mayor's court was
fined $10.70.

Messrs. K. F. Dick, John Trainer, and
Scott Hookes Have Accidents.
Bruises Only Injuries.
Mr. R. 1’. Dick had a bad accident
with his automobile Saturday. He was
driving along the heavy fill on the fine
new road recently completed on the
road to Monticello near Mr. Charles
Rogers' place, when the car left the
road and ran off the embankment about
twenty feet high.
Mr. Dick was thrown some distance
but was unhurt. His car, however,
was almost demolished.
Mr. Scott Hookes, of Porterdale, was
driving his car with a party to Indian
Spring Sunday. He was taking a curve
near- the bridge over Tussahaw creek
in Hentr.v county, when the car left the
road and threw the occupants about
twenty feet into a ditch. Only a few
bruises were the personal injuries, but
the car was badly battered.
Messrs. John and Clarence Trainer,
of Henry county, and Masters Walter
and Ed Rape, of Covington, were rid¬
ing near Ola Sunday morning. Mr.
Joli u Trainer, driving, undertook to
take a curve in the road, when the car
turned turtle.
Mr. Clarence Trainer suffered a
Fprained ankle and Mr. John Trainer
a <-ut on his forehead, neither of them
suffering any serious injuries. The
Rape boys were just bruised slightly.
